Keep your cool while keeping the environment in mind

Its only May, but its HOT in Kentucky.  95 degreees here on Monday Memorial Day!  Its time for Kentucky residents to turn on the AC.  But many are concerned about the expense and the environment.

There are many steps you can take to keep your home cool while reducing energy costs and taking it easy on the environment.

According to the U.S. government's ENERGY STAR program, "As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. So making smart decisions about your home's heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a big effect on your utility bills — and your comfort."

Close window coverings. If you have south or west-facing windows that get direct sunlight, close window coverings during the day. Shades and drapes not only provide extra insulation to keep cool air inside; white window coverings actually reflect the sun away from the home.

Maintain your AC. Air conditioners are one of the most energy-intensive appliances there are, so make sure yours are operating as efficiently as possible. Have your AC inspected annually by an HVAC professional who can perform maintenance that reduces energy costs and increases the life of your system. This includes cleaning evaporators and condenser air conditioning coils, checking your central air conditioner's refrigerant level and cleaning and adjusting blower components for proper airflow.

If you have an older central air conditioning system, consider replacing the outdoor compressor with a new, high-efficiency unit that's sized for the indoor unit. You can get advice from qualified energy contractors.

Finally, look for cool rebates. Energy companies, government and non-profit agencies often offer rebates for installing energy efficient air conditioning systems or for taking steps to make sure your AC is installed properly.

Stay cool... Its gonna be a hot summer! Pray for rain.  -Anglea
