A Santa Fe Train Track Story

It was only due to the vision and quick thinking of those pre-Statehood Santa Feans that railroad tracks first arrived in Santa Fe in February of 1880! New Mexico was still a “territory” back then and it was through the collective efforts of our territorial citizens who made certain our mountain community would not be without tracks and train service. They made it happen the old-fashion way by subsidizing the effort themselves. There was no federal stimulus package or state government economic development plan to make this a reality. Santa Fe was only a territory of the United States! The train and the tracks arrived only through local efforts. Why? Every community wanted to be connected to the best, new transportation technology in the 1880’s... including our territorial city of Santa Fe.

Today, the historic Santa Fe Depot thrives in the center of our Railyard District. It is an ever constant reminder of our connection to our railroad past and what can happen when a community comes together to make a difference.

So how fast did those trains run in the 1800's? I always wondered that.

Hi Emily, A wonderfully informtive photo story about the Sante Fe tracks and the train looks to be quite wonderful. Sounds like it would be fun to take a trip on that line and be able to catch some stunning photos along the way.

William, I have just the train ride for you. Let me know when you are coming!

Kwee, thank you. Trains are amazing subjects to photograph. I have never been to Korea and now I am curious of the train you mentioned.

Emily... with every post I read, I'm more motivated to visit Santa Fe! You always do such an excellent job and you increase my awareness of what's going on or what did occur in Sante Fe before we were born! Learning about what diferent parts of the United States has to offer really excites me. I prefer to explore other parts to live and work that I never visited before. Your home looks like a happy place to live!

Your photo and your story are exceptional!

Dee Dee, one of the many things I love about Santa Fe is discovering another story our my town's past.

Patricia, let me know when you are coming. I see TX license plates here everyday! Plus it is easier now - you can fly or drive vs how those early pioneers arrived on wagon trains.

Wayne and Jean, you made me smile when I read your comment on my iphone this morning! Stay tuned I have lots more history stories to tell you'll.
