Glencoe Grand Prix

There are a lot of wonderful things about living on the North Shore of Chicago, but one of the highlights is the Glencoe Grand Prix. The bicycle race has grown in stature and popularity since its humble beginnings in 2007 and now attracts professional-level riders from across the country. The Grand Prix was started as (and still is) a fundraising event for the Glencoe Educational Foundation, which benefits schools in Glencoe as well as Chicago public schools. But in six short years it has become THE event of the season.

This year the races are on Saturday, June 2, beginning at 8:15 with the Category 5 race and culminating in the AT&T Pro/1 race at 5:30. A “block party” with live music will follow the final race. Along with several categories of amateur races and the professional event , there are also kids races, beginning at noon with the 4 and 5 year olds, followed by 6-7 year olds and 8-9 year olds.

Where To Watch the Races
With the introduction of the long course in 2010, the GGP  has new places to watch the race. Of course, there will be the bleachers at the start finish line as always, but Triangle Park is another great spot to watch from. It’s on the west side of the course and from there you can watch the riders coming at you on South Avenue, then head south on Bluff Avenue.  If you need a nature break you can duck into the facilities set up in Triangle Park and be back in time to see the riders return up the quick but tough climb on South and then head back to town on Hazel.

Other good vantage points: Turn 1 on the lawn of St. Elisabeth’s Church. For some very technical bike riding go to the bottom of the hill at Washington and Valley. Or check out Turn 7 at Grove Avenue and Park Avenue on the sports fields of Central School. Be sure to see all the final turn action back in town. You can watch the peloton gear up for the final sprint to the finish from Park Avenue down Vernon Avenue.
