Take responsibility for your own actions!

I am getting a bit tired of the tendency in this country to push responsibility onto everybody else but yourself. I wrote about it and thought I'd share it.....

An increasingly growing Nation

fat people

America is known around the world for many things: it is the land of opportunities, wild west cowboys, outrageous hollywood celebrities, drive-through weddings in Las Vegas, baseball, a president who cannot pronounce “nuclear” and above all, it's very, very fat people.

It became ever more noticeable in the nineties that the American gut was not just growing, it was ballooning. A third of the nations population is now considered overweight and as the average person became heavier, the already chubby became even chubbier still.

As a consequence, adjustments had to made: hospitals have had to buy special wheelchairs and operating tables to accommodate the obese, and revolving doors have had to be widened by two feet. In case those plump patients never made it out alive, caskets were available at triple the normal width with reinforced hinges able to hold up any dead body mass up to eleven hundred pounds.

The airline industry has also been affected by the growing size of their flyers buttocks: it has been estimated that it costs them a quarter of a billion dollars’ worth of jet fuel every year.

Concerned observers started to wonder about the reasons of this obesity epidemic that affected every age group, every race, both genders, and every state of the union. Soon after, accusatory fingers started to point toward Mc Donald’s. But is it really their fault?

Looking into the history of this worldwide, ever-expanding company of “happy-meals”, it sure knows how to cater to its customers. In 1970, it offered only one size of French fries, which is today's “small'. Then a new size came along, called “large”, today's medium. Then there came a new larger large size, but since that was not large enough for many of its hungry and thirsty consumers, Mc Donald's went right along with their wishes and hence, “super-sized” portions of pretty much anything on their menu are offered.

Americans are also known of being big fans of everything that is convenient and by providing a tasty meal fast and cheap, Mc Donald’s hit again the nail on the head. Why shlepping home groceries, dirtying up the kitchen and dealing with the laborious task of cooking and pot-scrubbing, when one can just go to the golden arched restaurant, which is to be found on pretty much every street corner? It is a no-brainier for the lazy, overly busy, culinarily challenged, or lovers of huge portions of great tasting, yet nutritionally useless foods.

Even after all the health warnings in the media, doctor recommendations, FDA regulations, and a massive weight loss industry, Americans are still packing on the pounds at an alarming rate and Mc Donald’s is right there to help fatten up this nation, starting with its little ones. Parents with either well behaved or rambunctious, toy loving kids flock to this place like a moth to the light. It doesn't just fill the children mouths with food, it also shuts them up when they get to play with plastic toys of their favorite movie characters featured in the newest cartoons that they find in their meal. How brilliant!

Considering all the above mentioned tactics, trickeries and smart marketing strategies, I would say: “Yes, let's blame Mc Donald's for all the muffin tops and flabbyness of this nation!” The hell with the complete lack self control, the ignorance of the obvious health risk that comes with obesity, total unwillingness to at least once in a while prepare a nutritious, homecooked meal and the wrong priorities, when owning the latest I-phone is worth more than spending money on healthy groceries.

There is no doubt that companies are to blame for taking advantage of the weakminded and gullible with a fondness of fried and sugary cuisine, but maybe just once it would be a good idea if those poor “victims” would look at the shocking reflexion in mirror and ask themselfs: “Maybe I am the one to blame for letting myself go and starting tomorrow, I will not go there as much or maybe even avoid it alltogether”. Wouldn't this self-awareness be a laudable first step towards downsizing this country in a very good way?

Everyone has their own rocks to carry.. .some are very apparent and some are not. .

I don't think that no one wants to get that big.. there are studies that show food  being addictive as cocaine on some people. .recognizing it should be the first step.. .then seek help.

Responsibility has always been a personal thing until now. It seems the government wants to protect us from ourselves as well as support those who lack responsibility in other areas.

Most of our food is too plentiful and too cheap.  Corn fed cattle can grow very fast when pumped with hormones and sweetened drinks are very cheap when sweetened wiith corn syrup..If the country is ever to lose weight it has to end the industrialized farming methods that produce plentiful, cheap and unhealthy food and move to the old way of agriculture that provided us with healthier more expensive food. I do not think many politicians or voters would go for this esp with 315,000,000 mouths to feed in this country. In 1955 Americans spent 20% of their income on food and most was cooked at home...now much less than that is spent and most is eaten outside the home. A little walking would also help a lot.

On nice days I walk to and from my office...2.5 miles each way...takes me 35 minutes...the bus takes 20 mintues plus 10 minutes waiting for it. After a couple weeks the walk is  breeze. More people should walk to work.
