Why didn’t you leave the door unlocked for me?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Waters Realty of Brevard, LLC BK3064647

As I was leaving a showing this morning another real estate agent walked up as we were going out the front door.  He yelled up to me to leave it unlocked.

I responded with a simple “No, use your electronic lock box key to get the key yourself, please.”  His response was “Well, have it your way.”

Although it should not be necessary, here is my reasoning.

I owe it to the seller to leave their home as secure as possible when I leave.  I did not know this real estate agent so I was not giving access to anyone – period.  Even if I had known the agent I would have done the same thing only with a few pleasantries added!

My buyer customer remarked that it would be unprofessional for me just to leave the door open. If a non-real estate professional understands this then what does it say about the other agent?

As a real estate agent it is my responsibility to protect the homes of all I come in contact with as a listing agent, a buyer’s agent or as a rental agent.

Although it was not "Burger King" - I had it my way.  Door locked!

Gary - Common sense is often lacking with some of our colleagues.  If they don't understand the basics, and can't follow the rules, should they really be helping people with one of their single largest investments?  You did the right thing!

Laura - Yes it is! It is really not that complex, is it? Thanks.

Robert - It defies logic. Why buy ELB when a combo is cheaper? Thanks.

Robert - That is what I was thinking as well. Could have just had the house "staked out." We can never be too cautious. Thanks.

Heck, in my little town, the doors are rarely locked. Lock boxes are rare. Ahh, the joy of the small town...

Hi Gary, good  information. We never know who the other person is. You are resposible

for the security of the home. It was your lock box key that opened the door.

You did the right thing.

I could not get a door locked recently and I recognized the agent so I gave her the key.  I probably should NOT have done that.  I asked her, her name just to be sure I was recognizing her (former TV news reporter ?  anchor?)

Gary, I have been in this siuation several times myself. The electronic lockbox indicates that you are the last one to access the property. First, you don't know the other agent. Then, if the agent coming in behind you doesn't properly lock up then it's your responsibility.  I agree with you, I would have done the same thing you did.
