The Last Word on Blogs; Righting the Wrong and Turning the Tables on Blog Tyranny

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with The Car Wash Guy

It has been duly noted, that so often human behavior on Internet Forums and Blogs gets out of control with name calling and such. Generally, this happens when one participant goes out of their way to offend another and then the disrespected party gets their feathers ruffled and begins to seek revenge - egos ensue and the battle begins, often it goes on and on.

OBL

"Hey, I know that guy, he's a blogger!"

If you are caught up and embattled in a Blog Controversy, whether you started it or inadvertently found yourself a victim there is a solution. It is possible to Right the Wrongs of verbal or rather electronic attack of words. You can Turn the Tables on Blog Tyranny if you choose too and it maybe much simpler than you think. There are several ways to turn the tables and diffuse an argument on a Blog or Internet Forum. The easiest thing is to observe a few rules such as;

        1. Be nice and follow the "golden rule" of do onto others as you would have done onto you.
        2. Be positive and compliment the other party when they make a decent point.
        3. Agree to disagree, but admit you enjoy the debate and value the other parties and participants.
        4. Leave your ego at home, no need to plaster this all over the net.

If the situation still gets out of hand and you are following such basic rules of common courtesy and Blog or Internet Forum etiquette then consider an apology if you had made a mistake or compliment the other on their strength of character to continue the debate with such fervor and tenacity.

It really is possible to communicate using Blogs and Forums and gain insight, knowledge and perhaps even make friends. I certainly hope that this article will help propel thought in your online endeavors and allow you to have a more enjoyable experience on the Internet in 2008.

Hi Lance:  You have shared a very well-written presentation about a problem that occasionally comes up.  I like your solutions.  If only you could post this in every group on Active Rain.  Thanks for sharing...

Karen,

Hey thanks, I kind of have a confession however, I had that picture of Osama bin Laden and I just was looking for something to write to use that picture. So, I picked this topic. I am kind of glad you liked the article really, I wasn't sure if anyone would agree with me on this. I would like to post it in more forums, but, I couldn't figure out which ones to post it in. So, I just picked a few, but you got me thinking, on what other ones I might post it too, I may repost it to some other groups later and change it? - Lance

I am very angry today about something in Active Rain.  I'm waiting until tomorrow to write it.  I think that might help.  Kind of like counting to ten.

Lance great guidelines. I have not personally had any negative interactions. in the beginning I did not always know each groups policies so I posted a blog out of the groups guidelines and I got a harsh reprimand. I thought it was harsh even though it was a form letter. I elected to be very cautious and familiarize myself with the RULES when participating in the Rain. I heard from others that strangers happen by and leave anonymous comments. I have resolved that this community has so many participants and so many wonderful avenue of opportunities that I will just continue to enjoy the positive benefits here.

You'll find that you can only post to five groups for each post.

The author always holds the big stick, DELETE.

Yes, the author always holds the big stick, in fact James H. Wimberly, the guy who comes here every day to harass me told me some good advice the other day, he told me to speak softly and carry guess what? Lance

The four points that you make are something that people should apply to their everday life. For those of you who are not, then you need to start immediately.

Dionne, I had the same thing happen recently. I was unaware that the authors wanted certain criteria, and I wasn't posting what was wanted, so I eventually got an email from the author and telling me to stop spamming his blog.

Hi Lance and Rick:  On Active Rain it is usually considered poor etiquette for someone making a comment to another person's post to insert links to their own website, especially three of them.  It is considered similar to "spamming."  However, since the author seemed to be ok with it, it is the author's choice.

Very nice post Lance. I agree that rules should be in place. I come to Active Rain to learn about real estate. Even when I don't agree with someone, I don't say a word because ultimately "who cares?" They are just opinions.

Karen Anne,

Yes, you are very correct, putting in lots of links is a form of "Splogging" or Blog Spamming, however, I feel that if someone is willing to come here and post a comment, I appreciate their participation and therefore should let them kill a few birds with one stone;

      1. Participate in the AR community and learn something
      2. Get their 25 pts.
      3. And pick up a few in-coming links to their website

And I feel in doing this it allows people to see what they are doing there in the real estate sector, I am enjoying visiting other's blogs, websites and learning more about their expertise and specialty, Indeed you are an accomplished woman in Real Estate there in Fort Worth I see, Congratulations. Lance

Lance:  I was not "fussing"... just being "informational."  I, too, went to all three links, and liked the last one.  The last thing I want is to have everyone follow what I think is the way it works for me.  That would be very boring.  And, I appreciate your tact in your response.  Have a great week !

Karen,

Oh yes, I know, you were making a comment about Blog Ettiquette and you are very right, that this can be an over all problem. I had previously invited folks here at ActiveRain to post up to 3 links under their names as a tag line on their comments on my Blog Posts. My goal is to have 1,000 comments by the end of the month, so I posted this article:

http://activerain.com/blogsview/331753/Backlinks-are-Important-to

It is working and I may get to 1,000 comments within the next day, meaning I went from zero to 1,000 comments in only 20 days. Just trying to catch up with high-point scorers like you and give myself a Little Rain Activity, like you have achieved there, while I spread a little of my own as well. Lance

Lance:  I think your name is not showing up probably because you are commenting while you are not "logged in."  That sometimes happens to me and I don't realize it.

Karen Anne,

Oh, that's how that works? Hmm, interesting, you'll have to excuse me, as I am new here. I have been working on another project and then watching my emails, pop-up to alert me to comments being left here. So, I was clicking on the link on the email and then posting, but I was not logged in. I wondered how come sometimes my name did not show up with a link. I guess that makes perfect sense, Thank you for showing me that. No wonder you are a high points earner, I have been wasting my potential points by commenting on everyone's blog without being logged in, Lance

Lance, I don't know what triggers it.  Sometimes I get logged out and I don't even know it.  So, a good sign is when you make a comment... and if your name does not pop automatically... you are not logged in.  Take care... I am glad to share.

You mentioned about my "points."  There are others who write many more posts than I do, but I write about many subjects... real estate, funny real estate happenings in my past to share, mortgage info (I know my mortgage info very well), closing techniques (I occasionally do training), personal stuff, political stuff (sometimes gets me into "trouble"), happenings from my past teaching career.

Many of these things, which some might say do not belong on Active Rain, are simply different ways to share about myself and help people get to know me.  I think that personal relationships are at the heart of real estate, and at the heart of life.  And, the more people get to know me, the easier they can relate to me, and I to them, and the more referrals we can share with each other.  Take care...
