Five Below and Ulta Beauty come to Winchester, VA

There was great sadness in the Cooper house when Borders Books & Music closed in Winchester, VA.  We're all veracious readers, and Borders was one of our favorites suppliers for our addiction.  But, the Internet has come to our rescue and everyone continues to indulge in the addition.

The Border's building sat empty since early 2011, but that's about to end.  Two retailers have decided to split the space and open in Winchester.  Five Below, is a retailer that Five Belowcaters to teenagers with low-cost items is taking up part of the space. Their own description is, "Five Below is the leading retailer of trend-right, extreme-value merchandise to the teen and pre-teen market – all for $1.00 to $5.00."

Five Below was the brainchild of former Zany Brainy CEO, Tom Vellios.  Five Below has 205 stores in 17 states.  They anticipate climbing to 212 stores before the end of 2012.  For anyone looking for a job in a trendy retail store should contact Five Below @ Five Below Jobs.

The second tenant of the Borders space will be Ulta, a beauty supply store.  Ulta has 467
Ulta Logolocations throughout the U.S.   They call themselves a "one stop shop" because of their 20,000 products that covers all aspects of beauty, skin care and grooming supplies, and those supplies are for women and men.  The company has been around since 1990, and the are known for building in high traffic areas.  The former Borders site is perfect for Ulta.

Ulta will also be looking for new employees to work  at this new store.  They have not released the number of employees needed, but they have an application process on their website.  Interested people can apply at Ulta Jobs.   Winchester, VA welcomes Five Below and Ulta to the community.  We're glad you're here.

I'm surprised Barnes & Noble hasn't moved in to Winchester yet.  I was actually surprised when Borders went in instead of B & N.  (I lived in Capon Bridge WV for several years...did all my shopping in Winchester!)

You're like a local girl, Lisa.  8-)  I'm a little surprised that B & N hasn't gone the same route.  They don't seem to be doing much different from Borders, but I guess things go on behind the scenes that I'm unaware of.  Thanks for dropping by.

I hope they are both very successful. Have you done any shopping at Sharp Shopper in Winchester? My son works for one of the branches in PA and I know the owner.

So far, I've only walked through to check it out, but I will definitely head back when I have more time.  Their Starbucks coffee was very affordable.  My wife loves SB coffee.  How does your son like it?

I imagine the security at ULTA will be tight considering it will right next to a store that serves primarily teenagers.

Sounds like a very clever name...5 below.  Let's wish prosperity and longevity to both of these entrepeneurs.  It's always good to have new businesses breathe new life into an area.

5 below made me think of the minus 5 Ice Bar I visited (lol) the .99 store is junk but for 5 bucks you may just get some decent things. I bet he does well

Good morning Mike commercial buildings do not show people the recovery is under way.  While we have a few around here most are full with plans of adding new ones.  Glad to hear the store will have new occupants,

I hadn't thought of that, Aimee.  Do you think I should warn them?  8-)  I hope you have a great Friday!

I'm with you, Mona. We've had a number of new companies show up lately.  Good thing.  It looked like a ghost town in parts of Winchester.  Have a great Friday.

I hope so, David.  I looked at their stuff online.  It looks like it would appeal to teens.  Here's hoping!

Absolutely, Jon.  I was surprised that they didn't take a hit sooner.  The same with Barnes & Noble.  These big companies have got to keep adjusting with the times, or they're gone.

Thanks, Roger.  It's exciting to see new life.

Hopefully, this will be a good sign for the community, James.   That strip shopping center lost 50% of its big retailers from 2008 to today.  This is the last building to be rented again.  Yea!

Mike, my son likes working there ok. It is a great company. Not sure it fits his life plans, but it is a job which allows him some freedoms he is currently looking for.

The large Borders store near me sits empty. I haven't seen any signs or new stores moving in. Glad to hear your getting new businesses in your area.

I have a son that has that kind of job.  He's happy to be working, but I doubt it's a career for him.  Have a great weekend!

Alan, it was such a strange shaped building that I wondered who could make it work.  Hopefully this will be a good thing.

Thanks, Sheila.  You too.

Karen, my wife loves to read on her tablet.  I need to get one.  I've been a little slow to go down that path.  Happy Friday!

I never heard of Five Below but I lived in walking distance of an Ulta for many years. Now I have to drive about 20 minutes to the closest one but I'm there all the time. Love it.

Well, it's working for you, Jill.  Maybe I should try it.  I keep asking the girls at the barber shop to make me beautiful, but nobody works that many hours on one client.  8-)

Hi Mike.  My wife and I love to read.  We both got Nooks about 18 months ago.  It is wonderful.  I order the books right off my computer and bingo they are in my Nook.  You have to try it.

Conrad, I got my wife a tablet for Christmas, and she does her reading on that.  I'm definitely interested.  Have a great weekend.
