That You Absolutely, Positively Must Have

Want to know if you’re going to burn at the beach today? How to say, “I’d like mine without the fish eyes, please” in Greek? How else you can grill a burger? Send a postcard without a stamp? When the rain is really going to start? There’s an app for that.

1. UV Detector

Check the UV index in your area, even set it to send you custom alerts when the index is particularly high. (iOS)

(added bonus: check out EWG’s Sunscreen App to help find the best sunscreen for you, also iOS)

2. Weber’s On the Grill

280 classic Weber recipes plus 40 recipes for rubs, marinades, and sauces. You can even tag your favorites and create and share a grocery list so that the cook doesn’t have to do the shopping too. (iOS and Android)

3. Dark Sky

Tells you at a glance exactly when it will rain (or snow) up to an hour in advance. It uses GPS to locate your precise position and focuses on the next hour to give you minute-by-minute information. (iOS)

4. Postagram

Why buy a boring old postcard at a tourist shop (and then have to mess with stamps and mailboxes), when you can send that great photo you just took of the view out your hotel room at sunrise? For 99 cents ($1.99 internationally), Postagram will print and mail an instagram photo and message. They even perforate the card so it’s easy to save the pic. (iOS and Android)

5. Google Translate

Type in that interesting menu choice, or ask your cab driver to speak into your phone — and Google Translate will provide an English translation. (iOS and Android)

6. Wordpress iPhone Android

Have blog will travel. The Wordpress app makes it easy to add photos, write posts and edit content — all while you’re on the go. (iOS and Android)

7. Snapseed

Are you too cool for Instagram? Try Snapseed, which allows you to edit, adjust and add effects to your photo — as well as to save your photo to be shared on Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more. (iOS only for now, Android coming — the app is also available in desktop versions for Mac and Windows)

I may have to try some of those out.  It's mind boggling just how many apps there are available.
