Should You Choose An Old or Young Agent?

Realtor A member of the National Association of RealtorsIn Clarksville TN and in other market areas, there is an abundance of real estate agents to choose from.  First there is a difference between just being licensed as a real estate agent and being a Realtor. A Realtor is a member of the National Association of Realtors and subscribes to a higher professional standard and follows the Code of Ethics. Real Estate agents that are not Realtors, are not held accountable to these standards. So first, select an agent that is a Realtor to represent you.

Next is the question Should You Choose An Old Agent or Young Agent? Age shouldn’t be a determinate in selecting your agent but other things should.

Select an agent that:Should you choose an old or young agent

1.      Will listen and understand what you want and what you need.

2.      Is honest and trustworthy and will look after your interests.

3.      Is energetic, hard working but professional and up to date on real estate procedures.

4.      Is a full time agent and is affiliated with a reputable company.

5.        Uses technology and is willing to try new ideas    and approaches.

6.      Is knowledgeable on financing and market trends.

7.      Communicates well and is willing to stay in touch with you.

8.      Has experience and education in the real estate field with letter designations after the name.

9.      Has a track record of successful sales and happy clients.

10.  Is willing to customize a marketing/showing plan to your needs.

So Should You Choose an Old or Young Agent? Bottom line is does age doesn’t matter but all the other qualifications do.

If you are looking for a Realtor in Clarksville TN with these qualifications, then I am the one to call. Contact Debbie Reynolds Clarksville TN Real Estate Agent at 931-920-6730 For old, tried and true, professional real estate services.

#73 is right on the spot! Anyway, being a Realtor does not guarantee great service. The list is great though!

Debbie - Great post! I agree with it all. I know it is tough being new, at any age, but I do think experience counts. I also believe in education, therefore if the designations mean that an agent needed to learn something more about the field of selling real estate or a specifice niche, I believe it counts. Age is irrelevant with how much knowledge, honesty, integrity, communication skills, and customer service an agent provides. I feel it is important for the client to feel comfortable with the agent they hire.

Age has nothing to do with it.  One can have been in real estate 30 years and still know no more than a 1 year agent.

I remember going into real estate when I was in my 20s, When you are under 30 most people know you don't have years of experience. It can be a challenge when competing with more experienced agents. I don't have a problem with that now.

One thing that's important is how well the agent knows the area. Too many agents try to do a little bit of everything. There are areas of expertise and we shouldn't  try to be all things to all people. When I think of that I remember the agent who sold several of my land listings and later listed one and called with a question. The agent who wrote the offer said the buyer was going to have a perc test. His questions was "what's a perc test".

In addition to all of the attributes that you have listed, I'd like to add AFFINITY! It is important for the clients to feel compatible with their agent . Some personalities just don't work well together and the right match makes a big difference in the end result!

And of course there has to be a compatibility between agent and client if the relationdhip is going to be at its best.

A lot has to do with chemistry. There are some really good young agents who have most of the attributes and just need more experience and knowledge. Their energy is contagious.

Debbie,

I came across this older post of yours and read through it along with the responses. Age makes no difference as I have seen some competent young agents and some agents still doing a stellar job at close to 80 years young. You mentioned designations and being a Realtor® which stirred a few defensive comments (hi guys). What I will remark on is that taking the time and focus to do the designation shows a willingness to polish skills (because there is no other reason to do them) and gain perspective. I understand some folks not wanting to join the big R (it does cost) but I feel the benefits are there too.

Hi Dana, We share a lot of the same viewpoint on things and while I don't think age matters, knowledge, enthusiasm and energy do. What i mean is knowing is not enough without the follow through and nobody wants to work with a grump. I personally don't like a lazy type or the lack of get up and go. This conveys to me that it is not important and you rather be doing something else or I may be bothering you. Thanks for your comments.

Hi Debbie - I missed this one and you are very popular!! Your advice is right on - both sellers and buyers should pick an agent that is well qualified regardless of age! Regards Dave

Wayne, The discussion is always lively in the Rain.

Dave, I have met older agents that were lazy and incompetent and young , new agents that were very attentive and enthusiastic. I would rather have the enthusiasm with some energy that teh old stagnant agent.

Hi Debbie, found this from Winstons reblog,

Old or young, I have met many agents in both categories who were amazing and many agents in both categories who did not have a clue why they were failing.

Age doesn't make a difference in my opinion. People have different work ethics. I always tell potential buyers to interview their agents carefully and to go with (me) someone that will listen and not take them on just to get another sale.

It seems that most of the time people like to choose someone who is "like" them, which is why it's so important for agents to try and mirror their clients as much as possible.  Elderly people like to be with older folks in general, which is why older agents typically brand themselves as "senior experts" etc.  However, age really shouldn't matter, and as long as you are able to get them to know, like, and trust you...you can overcome any difference in age or personality with potential clients.

I don't think age should matter. You could have an old agent who rests on their laurels or a young go getter who is willing to put their all into selling a property. Experience counts, however it is not the only thing that counts.
