Real Estate on The Road

Real Estate on The RoadIf anyone ever tells you that being self-employed is the best thing since sliced bread…well they have part of it right.

I’m actually in Montana this week on my annual family visit. Unfortunately, due to the distance (and usually the stupid riduclous cost to fly here) I only make it once a year. Everyone says I’m on vacation. Ok, first off, visiting your family and stayin with your Mom where you have no Internet access and sit at the dining room table most of the day is NOT  A VACATION! (And my Mom is a whole other story.....)  Secondly, when you run a one-man show as I do in real estate, it’s hard to just turn off the lights, lock the front door and say “Gone On Vacation.” I know many do, but it’s pretty hard for me!

Internet marketing is working 24/7, just as it should be. I have rental listings that need to be leased. I’ve got closings the end of the month that have admin work to be done on them. Email comes to my phone. And I grew up in a business that you answered the phone, and it DID NOT go to voice mail until they spoke to a live person first. So, I answer my phone when it rings.

It makes for lots of challenges. As I mentioned, my Mom does not have Internet. Last year, a really nice neighbor gave me their wireless password (they lived across the street) and I could visit with my Mom, sit at the dining room table, and still get work done. Those people have since moved away. A new neighbor next door was not so willing to offer up the use of their wireless. So, I’ve been at McDonald’s every morning for 2-3 hours catching up on email, and such. Strangely, today, a rash of emails went out off of my Yahoo account, meaning I think my account got hacked. So, I’ve found another location, and have made a few password changes. That was not easy!! I have so many things set on auto-pilot so it even took me some time to figure out the old passwords so I could change them. But, got that done, and we’ll see how many more emails I get back from people I know.

Real Estate on the Road! Whoopie!

Thom sounds to me like you're figuring out how to make it all work out - on the road. Find some time to have some fun up there. Where in Montana are you?

Thom, it is hard to leave the worries behind, which is a reason why so many people leave this business.

"a business that you answered the phone, and it DID NOT go to voice mail until they spoke to a live person first"

If I have a pet peeve, this is it.  When I know, and they know that I know, and I know that they know that I know, that they only check their voice mail every hour or less, it's so discouraging to get voice mail when you're in the middle of negotiations, need to show a house, etc.

Just makes me want to scream.

I figure that if a person doesn't answer their home, office or cell number when published in a listing, they must have beenhit by a Mack Truck.

If an agent wants to have all of their messages go to voice mail, they should not publish their cell number.

Thom, Traveling in this business can be a challenge!  We ended up buying one of those "hot spots" or what every they're called for our interet at home, that way our internet is portable and can go with us.

I know the feeling, Thom.  I cannot leave a one-woman business for a minute, so my computer goes everywhere with me, and heaven forbid I don't have internet access.  Don't they have Starbucks in Montana?

Thom - I am also not sure about turning everything off and closing the door. And no internet killed my cruises once and for all. At $6 for 10 minutes, I did not use it much on the ship, and since this was quite an inconvenience, I am not cruising again.

You are definitely resourceful and that makes you a great small business person. I know exactly what you mean about not turning off the lights when away. I recently visited my parents, but at least they have internet. What's up with the neighbors in Montana? Every neighbor in Iowa would have given up their password for me, just because they knew my parents and trusted them.

Anna: more under control when you have access to the Internet more than just a phone. I was born and raised in Livingston, MT, 40 miles North of Yellowstone National Park. God's country...and I do love to come back and visit. Just need to do more than sit at Mom's dining room table!

Malcom: Or get tons of gray hair! Speaking of, I need to get mine colored again.

Lenn: It does amaze  you how others run their "business".

Tony: An expense I just don't need. I can catch a coffee place or something....Usually.

Jane: Make me laugh. No Starbucks in Livingston. Maybe Bozeman. I ended up at MTCup, a coffee house. DAmn, I just realized I did not take any pictures. Hmmm.

Jon: I won a cruise last year. Taking it this fall. Everything will get turned off for 4 days. To hell with it. I'm going to have some fun.

Cal: Newer neighbor...not so willing.

Thom - I am NEVER able to turn it completely off and I'll be going on a vacation for 11 days, which will be the longest I've ever been gone, so it ought to be interesting.

Thom - excellent post and it is difficult to leave, and like many others on this thread, I operate my own business so I cannot just walk away. I do have a few associates who I trust to cover in my absence, but all leads still come to me.

Hope you had a great trip!
