The Fast, Sometimes Funny and Frequently Furious Faces of Skepticism

Have you noticed just a "wee-bit o' weirdness" in how folks may approach buying and/or selling properties with a certain display of skepticism lately?

The faces of buyers and sellers can mold into the most interesting depictions ..and may I say, not always in good humor as this funny photo may suggest.

When it comes to getting to the bottom line, the “faces” of skepticism can come fast and furious around assorted matters that loom heavy before us....such as the

___ expediency ___ quality ___ condition ___ pricing ___ integrity___ motives ___  intentions of ... a) the REALTOR® who (they may wonder) is representing their interests, and b) “the other side”… 

And so can unfold an Us vs Them scenario where transactions can flounder when the parties involved assume adversarial roles. We don't want unhappy conclusions.  So...how  do we come to Happy Closings....??


Over the years, we have come to see the wisdom of  ready communication based on the Partnership Model in business and personal relationships. That can be the foundation for success, I believe. We love the idea of a “win-win” approach right from the start. Well done, you...an adversarial approach in business is not the path to longevity or consistent success.   Everyone in the transaction dance is in partnership with everyone else, for sure.

I'd love to agree with you, but sadly sometimes all parties don't play nice in the sand box and I'm representing a side to a transaction and I'm not going to ask them to pay more than the comps show or take less than the comps show just for the sake of kumbaya.  I'm actually in a stalemate right now on a deal where the other side is trying to use "listing prices" to justify their price.  Pfft I say.  Find me some sold comps that justify it.  Cause I found sold comps to base our offer on.  Now I'm saying I haven't done this all professionally and with kindness, but I do only represent one side and that does make the other side not on the same team.

janeAnne, it's interesting, because I think there are some people who really need a bit of the adversarial in their lives, and when I spot one I think long and hard before agreeing to take them on as a client.  And if I do, I will generally share with them that I have noticed this little trait, and it doesn't work for me.  Sometimes that's enough to straigten them out.

I have known people who thrive on an adversarial role...Ron and I in our real estate practice would quickly disable that function by keeping our word on everything we promised.  After a couple of weeks of working with us, they realized that they did not have to protect themselves...Trust wins.  A

MaryAnn -- there is weird, eccentric, "touched" and many other conditions along the entire continuum of humanity we have to deal with in our vocations.   Sometimes they are off the shoulder of the highway we prefer to travel, and we need to be able to say "good bye."
