Best Milk Shake in San Diego
I always get a bit nervous declaring anything the best, especially when it comes to food, as taste is inherently subjective. But judging from not only personal experience, but the hundreds of reviews spread across the Internet, Beef ‘n Bun Whistle Stop has the best milk shakes in San Diego County.
Beef ‘n Bun Whistle Stop is a small mom and pop restaurant located in the east county neighborhood of Fletcher Hills. I believe it opened in the 1950s and was definitely going strong when I moved to Fletcher Hills in 1962. I don’t think much has changed since then, which is probably why it remains so popular.
The menu has a few highlights and favorites including fresh fish ‘n chips, a juicy bacon cheeseburger, and crisp zucchini fries, but the most outstanding item on the menu is the peanut butter milkshake. People drive for miles from all over the county to have one of these creamy concoctions made with real peanut butter. Have them add in some chocolate and it’s like a frothy Reese’s peanut butter cup. Pure heaven! If peanut butter isn’t your thing, try the banana shake or cherry. They’ll basically custom make any shake you’d like, and they’re all deliciously thick and never runny. Just the right ice-creamy consistency and just as good as they were back in the ‘60s.
According to a former grill cook who worked there for 3 years, everything is fresh and cooked to order. Even the cod used in the fish ‘n chips is fresh, not frozen, and hand prepared every day. The only items that are purchased pre-packaged are the fries. Personally, I think that using all fresh ingredients really sets Beef ‘n ‘Bun apart from the big chains and it certainly makes a difference in the taste. The interior restaurant area is small and plain, but what Beef ‘n Bun lacks in ambience it more than makes up for in taste and value.
