Backyard kitchen gardening in Catonsville!

This is my first year growing a kitchen garden in my backyard and so far so good! My husband built 2 raised beds for my birthday in the spring which is great because it allows us to control the soil.  Basically we poured in 10 bags of good Miracle Grow garden soil mixed in with some compost.  I would probably grow in that garden if you planted me! We live in Catonsville near Baltimore and is in the USDA Zone 7 so we have a hot, humid growing season!

I started by planting seeds back in May for snap peas, zucchini and cantaloupe in one bed.  The beans did great and my son eats them right off the vine - a winner!  The zucchini and cantaloupe plants actually came up really well and were about a foot off the ground when my dog ate all 6 of them! Grrr!!!

So I had to start over with actual plants since I figured I didn't have time to start over with seed.  I also put a folding wire fence around both beds to keep that crazy dog away from my vegetables!

The zucchini and cantalope plants are really taking off and I added a cucumber plant on a tomato cage.  Home Depot is selling colored cages this year so I got one each of red, blue and green which look pretty cool in the gardens.

My other bed has tomatoes, peppers and our herb garden.  I am really excited about the herb garden - the basil is huge and the cilantro, parsley, oregano and rosemary are growing so well and we have already used most of them in the kitchen.   I grew all these from small plants but maybe next year I'll try seed.  The tomatoes should be interesting because some of them are from heirloom tomato seeds that a friend sent me from Seattle.  The heirloom plants are growing pretty well but there are no flowers on them so far while the tomato plants I purchased already have plenty of flowers.  We'll have to see what happens in a few weeks.

Anyway- it's been fun and I'll have to check back later in July to update the harvest! We may try for pumpkins in the fall too.

Eat in your backyard in Catonsville and love it!

There is such a joy of growing your own veggies in your own garden. Once you have experienced picking fresh cucumbers or tomatoes and putting them on the table to eat, you do not want supermarket veggies anymore.

I love hearing about your backyard garden. Glad to hear that the family is enjoying the fruits of your labor...including the dog.
