Healthcare, done right.

On such a momentous day in our history, I thought of a recent medical problem I was having. I was so thankful for my healthcare coverage. Here's what happened.

I was having some health issues that dealt with low energy and tiredness issues. I've seen the commercials for low testosterone and pills to enhance my libido and all kinds of things to make an older guy feel young again.  I am getting older... So I went to see my Doctor. I said, "Father God, why am I having these issues". To which He replied in my spirit, "It's a blood circulation problem." Really I asked, what should I do about it. "Get back to weight training." He said.

We've had our own gym equipment since about 1983 and it still works well. In the past few years I've upgraded some things in our exercise area with free weights and such in the basement but after the flood last fall, I had too much work and the gym area was still a mess. I made it a priority this spring to put that area back in order but still didn't seem to have the energy to go and use it again. So I asked my physician... "Please give me the motivation to go down there." He did.

I could barely do 2 sets of each exercise the first time and I felt whooped after the first 2 or 3 sessions, but my strength was returning. Even at the age of 55 I can still do most of the exercises I've always done and like to mix it up every couple months with different things to confuse my muscles. After 3 weeks I'm up to 4 sets of each exercise now.

After about 4 weeks, I've been experiencing none of the previous symptoms at all. The point is, I didn't feel like working out. I have never had a huge liking for punishing myself as it always felt to me. I love sports, always have but the training part was never fun for me. I still don't find working out fun but I force myself and am reaping the benefits of it. That's my whole point. We need to do what the Father tells us even when we don't feel like it!

I read Than Maynard's post yesterday about making tough decisions and I realized that I lived just what he is talking about there. Do the right thing, even when you don't feel like it and you reap the long term benefits. OK, time to go do some chest and back work today.

Thank you Father that you care enough to make us lie down in green pastures... even when we don't feel like it. Amen.

I have always hated weight lifting and most exercise. I played sports and was active, but the training part wasn't exciting. I had started exercising last year and got in a little better shape and was lifting weights this year until baseball season went nuts on us.

The season ends this week and I plan on getting back to it. I still don't push myself hard enough, but I figured 30 minutes a day is better than nothing.I have lost about 30-35 pounds over the last few years. Lost most of it when I ended up in the hospital for 5 days, but I have kept it off since then.

I believe you have given me ideas for a few new prayers. "Father, what do I need to do to stay in shape and motivate me to exercise my body and mind."

Than, I think His answer is Matt.6:33 and you are already doing that. Sometimes He just wants us to buck it up and do it. The result is fertile soil for Him to do His best work through us. I know when we minister to others, we must be in top shape, physically, mentally and spiritually. It never works to tell others to do what we are not willing to do ourselves. I know when I see somebody who is really out of shape laying hands on people, I question myself... "Do I want what he has?" The answer is usually no. I do believe our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit and He is not thrilled with some of the homes he lives in... but it's not a looks thing, it's a health and longevity thing, it's a what's best for our bodies thing. Congratulations on dropping some pounds. For every pound we carry, it's like 3 on our joints. I know when I pick up the 80 lb. dumbbells and walk across the floor with them... my knees are already singing before I do one squat! That's what it would feel like to be 360 lbs and I know I don't want to be there ever! And for Heaven's sake, avoid sugar unless you want to grow old real fast.
