Visiting the Pennsylvania Amish in Lancaster County

While driving through the beautiful roads near Lancaster, PA., I stopped to take pictures of some cows. Much to my surprise there was an Amish farm directly across the street. I snapped a few photos but did not want to disturb them as I respect their privacy. Their way of live is so intriguing to the rest of us.

The rural area is so beautiful and makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. Drive through miles and miles of farms and small towns to enjoy the countryside. I adore taking photos of these farms, the farm animals and the community towns. Stop by and see it first hand.

In 2009, I jumped on a plane from Sacramento to Philadelphia, rented a car and drove to Lancaster County to visit the Amish.  It was likely one of the more delightful journeys I have ever made.  I would love to do it again one day!

I spent a year and a half living in Valley Forge and the Amish Country was my favorite place. We used to take our son on the train ride through the fields which was just a beautiful step back in time. Thanks for the pix today.

Hi Myrl, It was probably the most fun and relaxing day we did while on our trip to Pennsylvania and Massachutts. The countryside is beautiful and the people are very friendly.

Hi Karen,

Our last day in town this trip we were going to Valley Forge and changed our mind midstream and drove to Lancaster instead. We had a good time and I took lots of pictures of farm animals.

Pretty pics but you have to wonder why they do this? If technology is the enemy then why use a tractor?

Some of it just contradicts itself

Hi Kwee,

Yes it is nice to rest and relax even though we were on the road almost everyday driving to Boston,  thru New York City, then  to Plymouth, then Hyanyus Port and the back to Philly. So our last full day we drove to Shanksville which was 349 miles away and then came back to Lancaster. Our last night we did not get back to the hospital until 10:45 p.m. but did not have a plane the next day until 2:30 pm.

Hi David,

I have to say the tractor looked like it  had been around for years and years and no tire on the front as it was on the rim but maybe that is how it was supposed to be. Then the lawnmower she was pushing looked pretty basic like maybe a plain gas mower and it looked old too. In the corner, there was a long wooden wagon being pulled by a horse or ox (?) and approx. 10 guys on it so they may have just come from the fields. They looked like they were working hard. My husband and I were talking about this and he said they just buy equipment to be productive.

I did not take a picture of their home but it was a nice big 2 story home. I was not trying to invade their privacy, not much anyway. I would not have put their house on the internet. My husband thought I stayed too long in the street taking pictures....yeah maybe all of 30 seconds total.I took cow pictures for 2-3 minutes but they didn't mind.

We saw them at the park across from Rittenhouse Square in Philly. They come there to the big farmers market and bring their wares to sell plus will pose for $$. I will buy stuff for $ but will not pay to pose with them for $$. It reminds me of Mexico or the Caribbean.

Well I commented yesterday but apparently I didn't submit it or it didn't show up. These are great pics. The Amish country in PA is very large. A definite old time and simpler lifestyle for sure. Hard work and long hours I am sure. It sure does take you back in time. I would hate to be the women though slaving outside in those dresses with the long sleeves. I would melt. Have yourself a wonderful weekend.

Hi Sharon,

It was not too hot but the dress looked warm to me too especially for outside cutting the lawn. The man on the tractor had a really long beard too but looked friendly. They have come a long ways but still not advanced like the rest of us. Religion and the Amish ways so important to them so I respect their beliefs but know I could not do it.

I kept submitting comments yesterday and they didn't show up either.  I ended up doing 15 before my 10 showed up.

Kristin, Great photos.

It is SO hot here in South Florida I don't know how the Amish people stand the heat.

Hi Patty,

I agree; they wear long dresses, long shirts and pants and work in the fields all day. They are a lot of hard working people who all have a mutual belief. Have to respect them for that.

Kristin, I wish we had been able to connect. I know travelling creates a sort of hecticness. I would have loved to have coffee with you. Hope it was a great trip and possibly we will meet another time. Have a great holiday.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for featuring my post of the Amish Family. I came across them by accident and was so happy to get the pictures.

Hi Cal,

I promise when I go back there in Spring 2014, I will let you know ahead of time and we can meet for coffee. My plan is to go to Lancaster anyway so it will be fun to meet in person. I love Pennsylvania as it is so beautiful and the toll roads are wonderful.
