Artificial Sweeteners

A friend also forwarded me this post and I thought I would share it with you all too.

I Many of us have heard that artificial sweeteners can make you crave more sweets.  So it is confusing that some weight loss plans encourage eating foods, like yogurt--with artificial sweeteners, right?

Diet sodas get more negative attention because they have zero nutrition.  Yogurt, however, has some positives (protein and calcium), along with the artificial sweeteners.  Try to limit your intake of artificially sweetened foods and drinks to two a day, because they keep the sweet taste on your mind and taste buds, which can make it harder to beat sugar cravings.

As for yogurts, try those with a little real sugar.  Look for flavored ones with no more than 14 g sugar per 4 oz container and no more than 20 g per 6 oz (this includes the sugar that is naturally found in yogurt from lactose and from fruit puree, honey or other added sweeteners).  Of course, less is best!  Most flavored nonfat Greek yogurt meets this cutoff.

Kristin - that must be why I never loss my cravings for sweets. While I don't eat a lot of sugar, I use artificial sweaters in my coffee, and put it on fruit. Thanks for the tips - it's time to cut way back on the Equal!

There is evidence that saccharin could be a carcinogen, and 'aspartame' disease is not a myth.Chief Cook uses honey, stevia and brown sugar where she can as a substitute for processed white sugar.  Just a thought.

I love my Stonybrook Oikos with Honey, Kristin. I can't do artificial sweetners, it makes me sick.

The labels are confusing Kristin.  Yogurts can pack up to 42 grams of sugar in a serving.  In any case whether it's natural or not almost everthing has a sweetener added.  Sodas still have sodium even if they're diet and that is another excess we can do without.  Don't get me started on sugar alcohols!

That is interesting I have never heard that before.  However I try not to eat anything with artificial sweetener, although I do eat the occasional yogurt.

Hi Kristin,

I'm a fan of the Greek yogurts.  I really try to read lables, but it's hard sometimes to keep everything straight.  What's good, what's not...  Nice information, thanks!
