Maximize Your Savings!

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Realty Center

If you are like me, you love to get a great deal. Here are some great tips to maximize your savings!

1. Make a plan. Plan meals before you shop so you stick to only what you need.

2. Don't get sucked in by sale prices. Those prices are not always as great as they seem. Carry a calculator for quick math to see how the sale price compares with the regular price. to get a steal, wait until the price is at least 50 % below the regular price or it's a buy-one-get-one-free...that's a true deal!

3. Start freezing. Buy items you can use to stock your freezer with healthy home cooked meals. Double your favorite freezer friendly recipes as you prepare your regular meals, and prepare one up to the final step. Pop it in the freezer and you've got dinner for a busy evening.

4. Have a storage system. That way you can easily see what you have on hand to determine whether you need to buy more or wait for the next sale to roll around. Put items with the earliest expiration date in front in the pantry so they can be used first, and use bags or baskets to keep like items together. If you buy a lot of frozen foods, have a freezer inventory list so you don't forget about those bags in back.

5. Strategize. You may not want to chase all over town to find sales on what you need, but you can pick up a circular as you enter the store and pay attention to what's listed. TheGroceryGame.com is a site that also follows sales at grocery retailers around the country.

6. Think 12 Weeks. Take advantage of your penchant for planning by learning the system. There are about 15 major sections in supermarkets (frozen foods, dairy products, deli, etc). These categories rotate going on sale every 12 wks. Although there are exceptions, most grocers put 2 to 3 categories on sale in a given week. If you see something on sale, ask yourself if you will need it again in the next 12 wks. If you will, buy it now so you won't pay full price later.

When I was younger, I found out the truth about one retailer and their "SALES". They would put sales signs up that said 25% off on their items that weren't selling. People would buy, buy and buy until there was nothing left because of that 25% off sign. But, when you lifted the 25% off sign and read the original price it was actually cheaper by about a $1 than the 25% off price they were advertising.

Good tips for shopping.  Geeze, I never thought of the deviousness that retailers go to trick folks re "Sale Items" such as Todd mentioned.  I also didn't know about the 12 week rotating of sale items.

While my hubby was alive I definitely cut out coupons which I gave him as he did the shopping.  Now as a single person I hit Aldi's first and if I can't find what I want there (items are a good deal cheaper and we have a great, well stocked Aldi's) I head to my favorite super supermarket and will use coupons.  I had dropped Sam's Club, but, I missed it.  So, on their last promotion to join I and another single friend split the yearly cost and love it.  We can purchase great meat items, etc and split the cost between us for things we both use and like.  The taste samples are great to!  I live nearby these establishments so I'm not driving all other the county wasting gas.

Our grocery bill stays very low because we buy almost no processed foods, and even make our own catsup, mustard and mayo!

I have stopped buying fruits and vegetables that will rot away in the fridge. Instead I stop by the grocery store 3 times a week and only buy enough for a day or two. This way it's fresher and I don't feel the guilt of allowing perfectly good food to go to waste.

I could always see that some sort of cycle was developing but couldn't quite put my finget on it.  I use coupons for items I would normally buy but I never purchase using them the same week they're issued.  Takes time but can be a rewarding game in the end Kristin.

Kristin, Thanks for the tips. I always look for the sale circulars  to see what is on sale but there are only two or three stores in the area that I go to.

Kristin, I agree about sometimes an advertised "SALE" is not really a good deal and with cell phones it is easy to use your calculator.  I did not realize that many grocery stores have sales in cycles.  The best sales of the year are coming up with the Purdue students coming back into West Lafayette.  The grocery stores slash their prices BIG TIME in hope of gaining the students' business for the entier fall and spring terms.
