Crazy Cardboard Boat Regatta at West Chester's VOA Park July 14 2012

Corrugate. Check.

Duct Tape.  Check.

Paint & creativity.  Check.

Paddle.  Check.

Ability to swim???  You just might want this one if you plan to participate in tomorrow's Metropark's Voice of America Crazy Cardboard Regatta Saturday July 14th!

They did so well last year they're back for the 3rd annual Crazy Cardboard Regatta, and this flimsy flotilla has a mission!  They're raising funds for a playground for disabled visitors!  Doesn't that just fire all your cannons??  Woo hoo, let's get underway mateys!!!!

And besides the racing, did we mention they're having a demolition category?  Last boat afloat wins!  A demolition derby on the waves, we're expecting total chaos for this one!

Boats have to negotiate a 200 yard course on the VOA Park's 35 acre lake on the north side of VOA Park.

With two categories, "Need for Speed" and "Show Boats", the judging can be fair to each type of boat.  And you're going to witness some pretty elaborate work too!

Boats can check in Friday 4-6 or Saturday morning 7-9.

The event will include a children's area with games and activities.

Then on Saturday July 14th the boats get down to business!  The activities start at 10 a.m., with racing from noon to 2 p.m. and the Demolition event after.  There'll be live music starting at 3 p.m.

Admission to the event itself is free, but you'll need a Butler County Parks Motor Vehicle Permit.  For non-Butler County residents, that's $10/annual pass or $5/day.  You can purchase at the park.

And it's NOT too late to enter!  Entries are being accepted at until the day of the event.  Registration forms, rules, boat building instructions and more are available at the website.  You can also call 513.867.5835 for further details.  Don't forget the Hold Harmless form too!

Beth, Checking YouTube there's a lot of these events across the country.  This one is still pretty new but getting a good turnout.  We've got a schedule conflict or I'd be tempted to go watch.

BLiz: With boats made out of cardboard, knowing how to swim might be a very important thing.  Enjoyed the video.

Bill,  Have fun!  Please post a few more photos after the race.  Perfect event for an ex-navy guy.

Erie usually has similar event later in summer during Celebrate Erie Days.

Anita, It looks like a lot of fun, and of course they have some folks in boats that will not sink to keep watch on the boaters :)

Carla, Not this time :)  Tough to fit into an already packed schedule.

Mary, Scheduling conflicts for tomorrow so not looking good on making it to the event.  Thankfully there seems to be at least a few people that YouTube it every year.

Brenda, It does look like a ton of fun, and the folks making the boats exhibit some serious creativity.

Bill and Liz:  Given the heat wave we are having that does not seem to move on, I would love to be in the brown boat and taking a dip.

Valerie, We're back in the 80s here after a streak of 100+ days, and we'd have gladly taken a dunk in the drink during that heat wave!
