So This Is What Happens To Socks In The Dryer...

So This Is What Happens To Socks In The Dryer...

They escape and put on a show.....Yes, your socks are not missing - they have escaped from your dryer and they are now appearing in a stage show in Los Angeles.

Sock Puppet Theater

On Wednesday night --- I went to see a production at Sock Puppet Sitcom Theatre in the Atwater neighborhood of Northeast Los Angeles.   Their website http://www.sockpuppetsitcomtheater.com/ tells us:

If you were the kind of kid who grew up watching old sitcoms in syndication after school, this is the sock puppet series for you. Take sitcom pilot episodes add socks, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, live musical performances and you have the making of a truly memorable series of evenings.

The venue, Atwater Crossing, is located at 3245 Casitas Avenue in the Atwater District in the city of Los Angeles -- the vibe is pretty cool with a bar and food available before the show.  The seating is cabaret style and while they ask that phones be turned silent
- the use of cameras and sharing on social media is enthusiastically encouraged.

While the production values of the show left a bit to be desired, the idea is certainly unique and fun. Wednesday’s sock puppet presentation was the pilot presentation of Hogan's Heroes.  Don't remember Hogan's Heroes?  It’s that 1960s television sitcom that continues to live on in syndication. The basic premise is life in a German prison camp during World War II and yes, it's a comedy and now performed by sock puppets
.   Earlier in the season the shows included the pilot episodes of  Three’s Company, I Love Lucy and Friends.  Each sock episode includes commercials and news breaks of the era.

I first learned of this theater on our local National Public Radio(NPR) station in Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley KPCC on the weekend show Off Ramp.   Check out the segment:    http://www.scpr.org/programs/offramp/2012/07/12/27359/sock-puppet-sitcom-theater-connects-new-audience/

For an interesting night out and for the approximate cost at the local multiplex --- you may want to consider the next two productions of the Sock Puppet Sitcom Theater season:  Roseanne(September 19) and The Golden Girls(October 19).

Hey Dick -- offbeat is definitely the operative word and probably not a concept that will be entertaining for everyone but for a night that is not typical, Sock Puppet Sitcom Theater may be just the ticket.

Hi Belinda -- and to think, I have been looking in the dryer for years --- I guess socks don't like that warm tumbling motion.

Michael - I've always wondered what happened to the socks that didn't come out of the dryer.  Now I know!  They're in a hit production in Los Angeles!  : )

Howdy and evening Michael

Michael my friend, I sure do remember those mighty fine Sitcoms, I also wish we still had those kind of enjoyable TV Shows today. It sure would be fun to go and watch sock puppets perform them.

Have a good one

Hi Dale -- the concept of taking a sock, turning it into a puppet and then to build a show around them recreating the pilot episodes of favorite television situation comedies is so clever.  You wonder how people think of these things.
