Portsmouth NH - Snow, Snow, and MORE SNOW!!!!

Front Bushes Covered in Snow - Heavy Snow - 1-14-2008 - Ann Cummings

Here we are again in Portsmouth New Hampshire, getting hit by ANOTHER snowstorm

At this point, none of my clients who've relocated here this past year are believing what I told them when I first started working with them when they'd ask about how much snow we generally get here in the Seacoast each winter - and after the snow we've already had so far this winter, I can see why they're wondering!

Until yesterday, we had bare ground with just spotty patches of snow here and there, and of course the snow hills that had been piled up in parking lots around town.  But nice bare ground, which was VERY nice to see!

Looking Out Front Door to Across the Street - Can Barely See - 1-14-2008 - Ann Cummings

REALLY - we really do get far less than this on average each winter!  And just to prove that point, the snow budgets in the towns around me are pretty much spent, and we still have a couple more months to go in which we could get even more snow.

Our snow budget here in Portsmouth NH only has about 15% left of the total amount that was budgetted for the WHOLE winter, and that wasn't taking into account what will be spent on today's storm.

I had an email the other day from a client I sold a lovely home to in Stratham NH.  She started off by teasingly commenting that she knew meteorologist was not part of the job of being a great REALTOR.........

Predicting snowfall is more art than science, and you can only go by what's happened historically.  This is proving to be a less-than-normal winter in most of New Hampshire this year.  Here in Portsmouth, we've already had about 3 feet of snow, today will add about another foot to that total, and who knows what the rest of the winter months of Jan, Feb., and March may bring us.  We typically don't have that much in an entire winter's worth of snow!

Looking at my birdfeeders during heavy snow - 1-14-2008 - Ann Cummings Portsmouth NH Bird Feeders with Snow - Portsmouth NH - 1-14-2008 Ann Cummings
The 1st picture above was around 7:30am this morning, and the 2nd picture was taken about noontime - piles of snow on top of my birdfeeders, and it's still snowing, just not as heavily as in the first pictures I took this morning.  As of about 12:15pm, the news is showing that we have gotten about 10 inches of snow here, with some more still to fall before this storm moves off the coast.

Global warming????  I'm thinking that philosophy might need to be revisited just a bit........

Ann-I am freezing and it's 55 degrees outside...as pretty as it looks...that pretty white fluff can't fool me. I think if there is anything that I could say I hate it would be the cold.  I hope you are staying warm.

Hi Ginger - after this, I might just be visiting some travel sites....... ah, some warmth and sunshine.....

Hey Maggie - that was good for a chuckle!  A 'snow budget' is what the towns project it will cost them for snow removal for the coming year, based on historical numbers.  This year was the out-of-the-ordinary year for winter storms, at least here in Portsmouth.  A 'hurricane budget' - I wonder how on earth they'd do that?  Those cost millions and millions when they hit, don't they?

Hi Neal - I only shovel my walkway to the driveway and garage.  I have a guy who plows my driveway for me.  I can't imagine having to shovel that - nope!  How close are you to Clearwater or Cape Coral?

Hi Midori - 55 degrees would be a welcome respite right about now.  Come on up and see this pretty white stuff - I've got plenty of coats and jackets, scarves and gloves you could use while here......  I am trying to stay warm.  We've heading south towards the end of March for a week or so, wish that were coming up sooner!

Thanks for the comments about all your WARM places - I'm dreaming......

Hi Lance - I'm glad you stopped by to check out my snow pics!  It is certainly a winter wonderland when we get the kind of snow we just got on Monday.  We've got more coming Friday as well.  It's beautiful to look out at, quite peaceful and still in fresh snow.  I'm here on the coast and we usually don't get anywhere near this amount of snow - pretty to look at, but bring on spring weather for me!!

Thanks for reading and commenting!

We just recently had another snowstorm.  It sure does make everything look pretty and clean.  For a day or two at least.

Ann - I love to see snow.  Thank you for sharing the pictures.  I used to live in the north when I was much younger.  Now I live in Texas.  I don't miss LIVING in the snow and the shoveling of driveways and the color of the snow at the end of its life . . .but I do miss seeing the new fallen snow.  The snow makes it mystical . . .and there is a peace and quiet that cannot be explained, except for the possibility of the magic for the day.

Here is Houston . . .it is rain, rain, rain for the next few days.  It's a bit cold and gloomy.  Therefore, I think I'll dream of your snow, snow, snow.

Have a great week!

Hi Karen - yep, after a day or two, time for it all to be gone, or another dusting is needed to keep it pretty!

Hi Meg - I hope you enjoy your dreaming!  And I really like how you described the snow when it's not looking its best, "the color of the snow at the end of its life" - that's perfect!  I'm glad you enjoyed my pictures!

When I was a kid...I swear we walked in the snow uphill for about 2 miles to school...I lived in PA at the time the best part was afterschool going down the hill...we used a tobaggon...now that is the way to travel.

Ann...

I have been watching this over the last few days. Y'all are having a good ole fashioned winter.

I remember when I was a child we used to jump out of the second story window and land in 10 feet of snow.

Please don't tell my Dad about that :)

TLW...ROAR!

Midori - yep, Orlando area where I'm from, actually Clermont.  I'd love to meet you as well!

TLW - we must have gone so long without a good old-fashioned winter that we forgot what they were like!  Bring on the non-old fashioned winters!!!   ;-)

Karen - snow, every once in awhile, is enjoyable, but we seem to be caught up in a seemingly never-ending pattern of storms every few days.  We've got one coming in tonight into tomorrow morning, and then the strong possibility of another one on Sunday.  I'd rather have what you're having....  ;-)

Many thanks for the comments!

i have a solution to the budgetary problems. everyone in town can purchase a second home in the ft myers/cape coral area, we have a great selection with low interest rates, then the city can pass an ordinance that the whole town must go south for the month of february, and then you don't have to plow.

no more problem.

simple!

Jay - you are quite the budgetary whiz!!  That sounds like a really cool solution, especially with all this snow. I would so welcome a warm Floida respite about now.  I didn't realize you were in the Cape Coral area.  We were down that way in October for a couple of days visiting friends.

Oh my gosh, and I thought it was cold down here!  The most snow I have ever  been around is...well, it melts as soon as it hits the ground.  :)  Don't know if I could hang with that much snow.  It's Gorgeous!!

Hi Stephanie - that's just the kind of snow I'd like about now - melts upon contact!  Usually, the snow we get comes in 2-3 inches at a time and then melts fairly quickly.  Being on the coast here usually keeps us from having the amounts of snow we've had this year.  It's pretty but I'm ready for it to be gone, and it almost is right now.  We've been having some warmer temps and a little bit of rain mixed in, all of which helps to melt those snow piles.  Yay!!

Kathy - I LOVE the four seasons, and would really miss that if I lived somewhere where there was only one season, or even 2.  Each of the four seasons brings so many special things.
