Text Messages, Android Devices, and Gmail (iPhone too)

Anyone in business knows how important it is to document daily work activities including communication with customers, other agents, and other third party providers. When the world was all paper you quite naturally have a paper trail. Later Fax machines increased the speed of business and still left a paper trail.

With the speed of the Internet nearly everything is in email. While email is not a paper trail, it does leave an electronic trail.

Smart-phones and other devices has everyone communicating, more or less, with text messages. Text messages are very efficient and liked by many. But what about the electronic/paper trail? Well one does exist but to gain the cooperation of your cell phone provider you will need a subpoena.

There is an answer for Android and i-Phones. In the respective market place you will find apps that allow you to copy, move, and save text messages to your laptop, generally manual backup applications.

If you have an Android device and use Gmail there is even a better solution. You should check out SMS Backup+. Backup+ is AUTOMATIC. You do nothing day-in-day-out. Backup+ automatically backs up all your SMS, MMS, and (telephone) CALL LOG to Gmail Labels (folders.) And, if you use Outlook with Google App Sync all this is downloaded to your Outlook too.

Optionally you can have the call log load your calls into your calendar so on any given day you can see who you called, who called you, missed calls, length of call, and at what time of day right in your calendar. You can also, optionally, backup your contacts but this is redundant if you use Gmail.

In Gmail I chose to create a new calendar called "Call Log" and all my calls are backed up to that calendar. Then in Gmail and Outlook I can switch viewing that calendar on or off or overlay it with my regular calendar as needed.

SMS messages age in a "folder" (label) called SMS. With the power of Google search within Gmail you can find just about anything stored in its database.

Gmail is available for i-Devices, I don’t know if SMS Backup+ is.

Give it a try!

Disclaimer: I have no relationship with the companies or producers of any of the products mentioned except that I use them all save for the i_Devices.

Bob- very interesting.  I would think that this is a great way to document what you do every day and have it backed up.
