 At her last checkup my pug tipped the scales at 9 pounds. But Lord help anyone who gets near our family without her "permission". A nine pound mass of sleeping pug turns into Kujo when someone ventures onto our lawn. Sometimes even I am scared...

 In high school one of my nerd buddies skipped a date with a pretty young lady to attend a Star Trek convention in Baton Rouge. The chance to be in the same room with "Mr. Scotty" was more important than a fleeting shot at romance. He got his autograph, and to this day he remains single...

 I've yet to see examples of such loyalty in the real estate business. Sellers will go with agents promising a higher price, and woe to the agent who stands between a buyer and FSBO.

 Perhaps we as agents are wrong to expect "pug level" loyalty from our clients. Sure, the fellow at the local Honda dealer was nice. But I drove to Shreveport to buy my minivan. Why? Because Shreveport offered a lower price! So much for my loyalty!

 At the end of the day prospects act in a manner that best meets their needs. Once an agent (or any sales person) understands this simple fact life becomes easier.

 Provide high level service, offer value to those you work with, and answer that phone when it rings! And when that buyer prospect purchases a FSBO without you, move on to the next deal. But do give the pug some extra bacon. After all, she has earned it!

Doug - I can't get past the fact that your pug is only 9 POUNDS, mine is 36 pounds, which is a lot for a pug and our last two were around 20 and my neighbors two are around 15, is it a puppy?  Anyways, I always strive to provide excellent service and it's probably why my past clients are loyal to me and continue to refer their friends and family.

I know what you're saying...and the agent promising a high price they cannot deliver is not someone to be trusted for long. Not sure that's loyalty or stupidity. But we need to remember that we are in sales and the basic tenet is "what have you done for me lately" I'm fine with this. Earn our trust every day

Doug:  Years ago, a business friend of mine intelligently pointed out ... that if you make your business all about price and price only.  You're going to lose more than you win.  I think this is especially true in real estate, where service and the little extras we provide SHOULD make a difference.  Still, sometimes it does.  Sometimes it doesn't.  As you point out, we have to be able to live with that .. and live to fight another day ...

Doug:

You have the right attitude for our business.  Loyalty only goes so far with some of our customers.  The best policy for us is to remain philosophical about customers who go elsewhere.  Dwelling on those people who don't stay with us can lead to ulcers.  Best to forget about them.  But, you are right in saying that those customers who are loyal to us are to be treasured, even with bacon if necessary.

I think that it is disappointing as consumers that we won't pay more for better service. I know that in my home we are a big fan of buy handmade/buy local. I would always rather give business to someone I know rather than just who can get me the better deal. I don't shop at Walmart hardly ever and I would rather pay more to support other small businesses. It's too bad more don't operate this way.

Hi Doug, please tell me we will find loyalty in at least a few more places. Through AR I have realized that this does happen everywhere. In a way, it is comforting to realize, it is not just me, and that moving on is best.

I've had the opposite good fortune.  My dog is far less loyal than most clients I've had.  In a recent escapade where he escaped from the yard, he immediately trotted around the corner to the elementary school and followed a couple kids and their mom home.  Fortunately, the mom called animal control, which I also did.  Within a short-time I had Kodi Bear back!  He's been one of the sweetest dogs I've had, but if there is a kid around or someone with a treat to give him, I play second fiddle!

Hi Doug,

The concept of client loyalty in real estate is something that is a victim of the changing times. Its the old adage of adapt or die. The younger clients are raised on internet shopping where everything is a commodity, is it any wonder that they feel they same way about an agent. They use Trulia, Zillow, and Realtor.com apps to find properties. They hop from one brokerage site to the next at the first sign of registering and have the mistaken concept that one agent is as good as the next.

Its our job to show our potential clients the benefits of working with us and how our knowledge and experience will help them. Either with cost savings, a smooth transaction or avoiding legal issues through our experience. Blogging is what our up and coming potential clients understand and its a great way to show the world why they should use us.

Just my 2 cents worth.
