The Dangerous Truth About Sun Protection - Which Sunscreens Are Safe?

Time for my yearly lecture on sun protection.  Not all sunscreens are created equal....some actually do more harm than good.

Are you wasting money on a product that not only isn't protecting you, but could be increasing your risk of cancer?

at the beachMost people choose suncreen based on the SPF number...which refers to how much longer you can be in the sun before you burn.

SPF ratings refer only to protection from UVB radiation (sun burning rays).

SPF ratings don't refer to UVA radiation (the dangerous killer rays).

In order to be protected from UVA radiation, which is the primary cause of skin cancer, your sunscreen must be "broad spectrum" and contain one of the following ingredients:

  •  titanium dioxide
  •  zinc oxide
  •  avobenzone (also called butyl methoxydibenzyl methane)
  •  Mexoryl SX
  •  Tinosorb (not available in U.S. products)

If one of these ingredients is not listed as a PRIMARY or ACTIVE ingredient, the sunscreen does not protect you.

While you are checking the list of ingredients, here's two ingredients you don't want:

1.  Oxybenzone, a common active ingredient in US sunscreens,  is a hormone disrupter (it mimics estrogen).

2.  Vitamin A  (also listed as  retinal palmitate) is added to 41% of all sunscreens.  Vitamin A sounds like a good thing, right?  Wrong.

Data from an FDA study indicates that:

"Vitamin A, when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight, may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions."

What are the BEST SUNSCREENS?

What are the WORST SUNSCREENS?

Find your sunscreen and see how it rates

My sunscreen of choice is Badger.  The ingredients are healthy and  I love the way it goes on and how it feels.  Here is a link to their "find a retailer near you"  if you are interested in trying it.

Helpful Tips:

  • Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure (especially the non-mineral ones), and reapply often
  • Apply sunscreen liberally - Not using enough drastically reduces the SPF
  • Some unprotected sun exposure (15-20 minutes a day) is beneficial - a great source of Vit D
