Live Music

Austin is known across the globe at the Live Music Capital of the World®, with literally hundreds of music venues and a reputation for nurturing talent.  The premier showcase of the city’s music scene is the annual spring SXSW Festival when musicians and fans from around the world descent on the city of Austin.  The longest running concert music program on American television, Austin City Limits, is videotaped on the University of Texas at Austin campus.  Once known mostly for its country and blues music, today’s Austin’s music scene is as diverse as its ever growing population, hosting musical events fromThe last of the true TX dance halls...celebrating the "Best in Honky Tonk Music in Texas" the Celtic Music Festival to Reggae Fest.  The city is a cradle of musical talent, nurturing everyone from the late Stevie Ray Vaughn and Janis Joplin to living legends such as Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker and The Dixie Chicks.

Performing Arts & Entertainment

Austin’s artistic side is alive and well.  We are a creative community of designers, painters, sculptors, dancers, filmmakers…artists of all kinds.
The venues for experiencing art in Austin is just as diverse.  The nation’s largest university owned collection is exhibited at the Blanton Museum on the U.T. campus; and you can view new talent in our more intimate gallery settings.  We have several world-renowned classical performing arts organizations including Austin’s Lyric Opera, Ballet Austin and the Austin Symphony.  We also have a number of live performance venues including the Long Center for the Performing ArtsThe hills are alive with music all summer at the Zilker Hillside Summer Musical Theatre! and the Paramount  and Stateside Theatres to just name a few.  Like to enjoy summer evenings outside enjoying good entertainment? The Zilker Summer Musical is an Austin institution for watching musical theatre under the stars.

And, the Austin Zoo attracts over 200,000 visitors annually and boasts plenty of family friendly fun. Did you know that Austin is also home to the world’s largest urban 750,000 bats fly out at dusk from the Ann Richards Bridge during spring/summer....at their peak the number reaches 1.5 million!colony of bats?  There are fabulous sidewalk cafes around town that are likely to be both dog and kid friendly that contribute to Austin’s great family oriented daytime vibe.
