Yucky Smelling Sponges... ugh

Ok Ok - I'll admit it.  I frequently put my wet sponge in the microwave for a 30-45 seconds thinking I'm doing a good thing... maybe yes, maybe no.

I just watched this video on Yahoo's Shine network...and, no, microwaving does NOT inhibit the awful smell.  But, yes, it does kill some germs.

...  Good news though is that leaving a wet sponge to soak up the sun's rays - eliminates odors!!  Who knew? (Sorry, if you see the advert... I wasn't able to figure out how to lose it.)

So, I guess I'll guess have two sponges rotating at any given time in my kitchen... one to use for four days, one out sunbathing for four days!  Rotate and repeat :)

I love easy tips like this, don't you?

Hey Peggy, great tip if it works. We used to put sponges in the microwave too. But my partner decided we were better off without them. What do I use to wipe up stuff now? Paper towels. I am a sponge fan, so maybe I'll try this!

Interesting. I've put sponges in the dishwasher -- good? bad? (Paper towels are probably the best.)

The sun is a wonderful thing.  I'll have to give this one a try.

Always keep my sponges in the dishwasher and they go through each cycle. Never have a smelly problem.

Now that works, Margaret... if you have a dishwasher!!!  In my 1902 building that has not had pipes updated, dishwashers are not allowed... bummer :(
