Got a Poison Ivy Problem?

This site will help identify it for you.

If you are not familiar with the Poison Ivy Plant, you probably have never come into contact with it yet. Once you get it, you become very aware of poison ivy plant in wildwhere it is on your property. If you have the plant, you will want to know what it looks like so that you can take care in working in the yard in the future. There is a site available that will help identify the plant for you.

If you send a photo to the KillMyPoisonIvy.com E-mail address, they will let you know if the plant is poison Ivy. Pretty cool! The company actually provides a service to remove the poison ivy; something to consider if you live in Burlington MA.

While I was in the hardware store today I noticed there was a product for sale for relief of the symptoms of poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. It is no fun getting the itchy, scratchy effects of the “poison” plants; it is good to know that there is a product to correct the itchiness. If your local hardware stores do not carry this product it can be ordered through the web site - http://www.poisonivysoap.com/

Poison Ivy soap

Prevention of the symptoms is best; identifying the plants can help in avoiding it. If you have property and poison ivy is known to grow in the area, find out if you have it. If you come into contact with it, have a way of correcting the discomfort.

Some people are actually allergic to poison ivy as well. Thanks for sharing these resources.

I know some that are allergic, things can get really scary, really quick Michelle. Those that I know are aware of their surroundings when they are in high risk areas.

Yep, we have that in Del Norte County. It climbs up huge old pine trees. Looks beautiful in the fall when it turns PINK. When I take my dogs for a run through the forest, I always cover up including gloves. Not that I would touch it, but the dogs might and then I touch the dogs.

Hella, thanks for the comment.

I have learned that it is important to see where the poison ivy is while it has leaves. You can get still get the oils from the plant after the leaves have fallen off in the cooler months.

Tom, Poison ivy/oak is pretty common here.  We have to watch for it around our home, and also when we're out showing homes.  No open toed sandals if you're heading anywhere that might even have a chance of the stuff.  And we use a poison ivy oil remover called Technu.  It's like the soap you mention.

I go through a lot of Technu myself Bliz, it comes in a liquid form. I wonder if it is available as a bar?

Not sure Tom, but I just spent part of the morning significantly increasing my odds.  Had to cut up a fallen tree leaning on our back fence, and of course there had to be some poison oak on the only path I could use to get through the brush :)  Shower and technu, and hope for the best!

It's always interesting at the end of the day Bliz. You clean up the best that you can, and wait to see if you are safe for the next few days.  :)

Have you heard that washing with Selsun Blue?
