DON'T HATE ME - TODAY I LOVE WALMART!

It seems almost everyday someone, somewhere is complaining about Walmart!   It varies but usually you can count on someone being upset with:

  • their staffing policy
  • their outsourcing of product
  • the unsavoury shoppers
  • their size (the store not the shopper!)

But today I am so happy with my local Walmart because I have found the world's greatest fresh blueberries and I have to share a photo with you:

They say they are a "PRODUCT OF CANADA" !!!

(even though they also say 1 US dry pint and they have a label from Naturipe Farms in Florida - what's that all about?)

I have no issue with the majority of our wintertime fruits and vegetables coming from warmer climates; otherwise we'd not have them.  My Father from Belfast remembered the first time he saw a banana and didn't know to peel it!   I digress . . .

My point is that all spring my blueberries have been coming from New Jersey, USA!   Today, to find a Product of Canada and at a cheaper price - well that just blows my mind!

Thank you Walmart for sourcing local berries (I think - I'm still confused by the label)

(and here is a pic of the gorgeous, plump and beautiful blueberries before I ate every last one of them!)

My name is Susan Emo and I am a PRODUCT OF CANADA (and a Blueberry-holic !)

Susan, we just came from a Walmart and I couldn't believe the produce prices. Otherwise the store did have an awfully high funk factor.

Florida made the blueberries and Canada made the container and label. LOL. I get my blueberries at Costco. Even a bigger store than Walmart! Ha.

I am not a Walmart fan but it is not because of their policies, it is a free country (well maybe) and they can do whatever they want in their business. More power to them. We are getting a huge new Walmart in our suburb but their is one only 4 miles away in the other suburb. Walmarts everywhere! It is the majority of the people I encounter there that is the issue.

Our Walmart is not a super Walmart so they don't sell produce.  I love to hate Walmart because they put so many mom and pops out of business but the prices are better there for some things than anywhere else.  I'm glad you got your blueberries.

Interesting post, Susan.  I think blueberries can be grown almost anywhere. My parents lived in Benton County, Arkansas, home of Wal-Mart. We used to go to a "pick 'em yourself" berry patch there.

My sister-in-law worked for Wal-Mart.

Yep, love them. or hate them...I (like many) have some issue with their policies, but I do shop there. Wal-Mart has many items at a better price than other stores. Charity starts at home!

I dislike Walmart and have no interest in shopping with them. The last time I was in one of their stores I noticed smashed strawberries on the floor by the checker, a gallon of open milk behind her, and the lady in front of me moving her frozen turkey with her right foot.

Hi Susan~ Everyone has an opinion about Walmart and they are entitled to their opinion.  I don't have to agree with it!  I shop at Walmart frequently.  I like that it's mostly one stop shopping for all my needs.  We were there today, but some toiletry items, a can of red paint, a bulletin board for the office and our other groceries.

BTW, I like blueberries, but I LOVE watermelon.

Susan,

I'm always amazed at the hatred some people have for WalMart. It's only a store, geez.

Hi Susan~
Good for you!  Here in California, we are blessed with some wonderful fruit, whether in a large store chain or the local farmers market.  I am fortunate to have fresh strawberries on my cereal year round.  We are so lucky!

Mark - I like any bargain on fresh produce Margaret - I hope you enjoyed yours as much as I did mine Sharon - I devoured a huge package of raspberries from Costco last week - mmmmmm Patricia - I have found some of their fresh food to be half the price of other stores which is pretty hard to say no to. Shar - LOL, you may be correct! I get most of my stuff from Costco too

Susan - I agree that many Mom & Pop places are having to shut down and that box stores are contributing to that but shoppers need to be able to have access to fresh food at a reasonable price. When I see local produce stands selling fruit and veggies at 3 times the price of a bigger store I will not endorse them. Especially when I see them selling "local" bananas and oranges!!!

John - we have a local pick your own blueberry patch about 30 minutes from my home but I don't find them as plump and tasty as what I can get in Walmart. I guess they're good for baking and preserving but I only like them fresh. Jeffrey - charity does start at home and the big box stores employ many local people Greg - one of ours is quite nice. Clean with polite and helpful staff: nicer quality of shoppers too! Donna - never make apologies for looking out for your bottom line :) Rich - there is always someone on a soapbox about something! Paula - thanks you your weather

Paula - thanks to your weather, we too have fresh fruit all year long. :)
Diana - I can't bring myself to cook a fresh blueberry. I use frozen for baking and fresh for eating!
Kristin - I'm going to continue to believe my blueberries were Canadian! (were, being the operative word!)
Al & Peggy - aren't they the best - almost crunchy in their freshness!
