When inspecting a home, you need to get in as well.

When inspecting a home, you need to get in as well.

At a recent home inspection I was there before the client/ buyer. I performed all the exterior of the home then the buyer arrived for the appointment.

I took the key out of my pocket that I had received from the Realtor's office to gain entry.

Low and behold it would not work. It looked like a freshly cut key too. That makes me a little upset when i can'y gain entry to a home.

The key will not work. Entry denied.

After about ten minutes of trying to move and jiggle the key to get it to work I had failed.

I then called the listing agent and asked if they had a different key and she said that one will work you have to "jiggle it a lot". Really? You would think that if a homes lock will not work without "JIGGLING It A LOT" it just might be time to have a new lock installed?  Did no one even try the "new keys" to see if they worked or not? I guess not.

After I called the Realtor back and said the key simply will not get us in the home, she said come to the office and get a different key.

So, back to the office I go, I got the new key and the same results. Now an hour has passed and I'm running late. I then called the listing agent again and she said she would be there in about twenty minutes to get us in.

She finally shwed up and opened the lock box on site. Then it still took her ten minutes of trying to get the front door open. But she finally got the door open.

I told her I think it's time the seller installed a new lock with keys that work.

She looked at me and said, "they are selling the home anyway". What? "The buyers will install new locks when they buy the home"... I simply looked at her and said, "I still need to get in and you still need to show the home too, there needs to be a working lock so everyone can get in when they need to"

Have a great day everyone.

Hi Charles,

Good to see you back my friend. I did get the dead bolt open with a key. But with being a mother with three chirdren I did'nt want to show them how to "break into a home". LOL

But I do like the "if the door is credit cardable" line.

Have a good evening in Washington.

Best, Clint Mckie

Hi Roy,

Every now and then we find a home that will not cooperate with the keys. Glad to say this one is gone for good. Unless they did'nt change out the lock set and I need to go back for something.

Thanks a lot Roy for the comment.

Have a wonderful day in Virginia,

Best, Clint Mckie

Hello Clint, telling them it will work and then telling them to come by the office to pick up another one is unacceptable. Checking to see if the keys work before putting them in a lock box is not that hard of a task.

Enjoy the rest of your week-Adrian

Sounds like even WD-40 in the lock will not help!  Why not just replace the knob with a cheapo and be done with it?

Clint, nothing makes me madder than keys that won't open the door...well, I thought nothing would make me madder except now I'm mad at that agent who suggested YOU come back for another key.  Ridiculous.

Hi Adrian,

That's what I asked the Realtor. She said they did, but you had to "JIGGLE IT", then if you have to jiggle it , it does'nt work right.

Replace the lock set. End of problems.

Have a good day in Bothell, Washington.

Hi Jay,

You got me on this one. LOl I got a call from the agent yesterday about the home. The seller is requesting the pictures I took to show the inspection process. "WHAT". The agent has the report. With pictures and words and everything. <:-)

Now I'm really confused.

Have a really good day in Northern Virginia.

Hello Mona,

I guess she thought or had better things to do than help out a fellow agent.

It took three sets of keys and two agents to finally get us in the home. Guess what made it to the report. Of course the front lock that did'nt work right.

Some agents are down right lazy when it comes to doing their job. Either for themselves or another agent within their own agency.

Have a great day in Sylva and Dillsboro.

Hi Randy,

Yes the new repair order for the new lock set was in the report as not working. If it takes more than a couple of turns or tries to get the lock open. Then it's a non operational lock set.

The agent I can't do a thing about. I have to deal with ho ever it is.

Have a great day in Big Rapids, Michigan.

Morning Clint congrats on the feature and it sounds like you were getting a little irritated.  What I don't understand is why?  You just lost about two hours out of your day for a man with your means that's nothing sir.  Enjoy the day :~)

Hi James,

Irritated, yes.  And the loosing of time is never a good thing. I don't like running around for keys when the Realtor office could have brought them over.

Let's work together to get this home inspected and hopefully sold.

After all this is what it's all about.

Have a good day in Rogers Arkansas my friend.

Hello Gita,

I wish this was the case for all the homes being sold here. But there are many times the buyer and myself are the only ones at the inspection. There is one Realtor who shows up for every inspection no matter when or where. I applaud her for her efforts.

Have a good day in Bucks county Pa.

That agent should have said that  she would be right there to let you in the first time you called. I wonder how many showings they lost because agents couldn't get the door open?

Hi Jeff,

You are exactly right. But it did'nt happen that way. I don't know of other listings they have the lock problem with but it should be "NO LISTINGS" at all.

Thanks for the comment and have a wonderful day.

Clint, With the way they use the automated key cutters you see many keys not work right if the original is worn. Sometimes I miss that old machines where you could fudge it a bit. But know one knows how to do that any more.

Hi Rob E.

You will never know the commish's lost  for lack of entry. The buyer looses interest and moves on.

Hi Donald,

I have to agree with you.

The new ways are not always the better ways of doing things. The old ways seem to work much better.

Have a good day and evening in Washington State my friend.
