"What does 'economic justice' mean, except that you want something that someone else produced, without having to produce anything yourself in return?"

Thomas Sowell

Wow, that sounds like gubment!  But I digress...

Economic justice.  It just sounds good.  It really sounds good!

What is it?

My Oxford dictionary defines "justice" as:  treat or represent someone or something with due fairness.

Again, the question may be asked, what is "due?"

Interestingly, the Center for Economic Justice and Equality defines economic justice as:

"Economic justice, which touches the individual person as well as the social order, encompasses the moral principles which guide us in the design of our economic institutions.  These institutions determine how each person earns a living, enters into contracts, exchanges goods and services with others and otherwise produces an independent material foundation for his or her economic sustenance.  The ultimate purpose of economic justice is to free each person to engage creatively in the unlimited work beyond economics, that of the mind and the spirit."

They call economic justice "The Third Way," beyond, as it were, capitalism and socialism.

This organization sees Economic Harmony as a balance between Participative Justice (input from capital and labor) and Distributive Justice (profits for owners, wages for employees).

What they have defined is FREE ENTERPRISE!  I don't know if that is intentional or not, but FREE ENTERPRISE is thus defined!

We already have determined that FREE ENTERPRISE is moral!  It has to be!  It is the only system that does what this definition states!

And it would do that except...

Except for what?  What Dr. Sowell suggests!  He suggests that the new Doublespeak changes words and concepts from what they are to what sound good!  Economic justice has been changed, especially in the last couple of years, into belonging to a group very, very worthy of gimmes!  An ethereal group very, very worthy of somebody else's production!

Why?  Because keeping what you produce is "rich" and the "rich" have stolen it all anyway.  It is bad to steal! So why not just turn it over to those who "deserve" it?

I have said for years that the debate now is not between conservative and liberal, or even left and right.  Continuing with Dr. Sowell's suggestion, the debate is now between the producers and non-producers, and the achievers and the non-achievers.  The debate is now over REDISTRIBUTION of one group's "stuff" to another group that more deserves it!  The proverbial, and non existent, free lunch.

Going back to the Oxford definition, giving huge percentages of production to the non producers, simply because the gubment decides they "deserve" it is NOT JUSTICE.  Neither group is treated with, as Oxford defines, due fairness.  Read the definition again!

And, according to the Center above, such transference (should we say redistribution?) of production is not a moral principle, or otherwise produces an independent material foundation for economic sustenance.  And such transference (should we say redistribution?) is not Economic Harmony as defined above, for such harmony balances input and distribution!

What then is Economic Harmony?

FREE ENTERPRISE!  FREE ENTERPRISE IS NOT A THIRD WAY.  IT IS THE WAY.

The key word is FREE...

Hi Jay,

Free enterprise is the way to go. Fewer regulations when it comes to issues other than the safety of the environment and the citizen's of this country.

Anyone can make what ever they want to make in a free enterprise system. It's totally up to them too, some are better at it than others.

"MAKE IT HAPPEN".

Have a great day in Virginia.

Best, Clint McKie

Our concept of free enterprise is eroding away and I don't know if it is to late to stop it.  What I do know is that if the current government stays in place and that includes Congress and the President we sir are in trouble.

Good evening, Jay. Sadly, the US is becoming more and more socialistic. I wonder how long before it will be before "free enterprise" is dead...

Jay, I've always had a hard time with that word "deserves."  There used to be a credit card company whose line was "Get the credit you deserve."  Who deserves?  Why would anyone "deserve" a credit card?  The language seems to be born out of an entitlement mindset that believes because I am, I deserve.  From my biblical training, I know that a man who does not work, does not eat.  We've changed that to he deserves to eat.  Why?  If he's too lazy to get off his caboose to work he shouldn't be fed by someone who strives to feed his own family.  Special needs situations are different.  Society has always taken care of them, but the wanton gimme society that we've created is killing our country and it's image of itself.

Mike - I was tempted to put that Biblical quote in the post, but decided to stick to the economics of it all.  But I could have!

Jay - I agree Thomas Sowell is always a good read.

Free enterprise is a pretty good system if we add due process and the rule of law from the government side.  But it looks like we have somehow managed to screw it up.

Pope John Paul II wrote in his early years before he became Pope that capitalism could not exist without morality.  We have managed to screw that one up too.

We get another chance to right the ship of state in November.  I have high hopes but, if we are not careful, we could screw that one up too.

Keep writing, Jay.  We all need to be reminded where the path to greatness lies.

Thank you Ted, not only for your thoughts but kind words.  If you click on the blue word "moral" above I wrote a post on the morality of free enterprise just a couple of weeks ago.  Our Founding Fathers had LOTS to say about our gubment system and how it demands morality as well to function properly.

We are slip sliding away.

Just saying.

Jay, Great post and some very good comments. We are in deep sh.... now that only 49% are paying all the taxes. The 51% will be voting themselves even more of our wealth.

That 51% has been the goal for a long time Tom.  It is incredible to think that this could happen.

If you haven't read Atlas Shrugged, written I think 1951, you would enjoy it.
