"Ma in Her Kerchief" Lives in Balsam, North Carolina

This flower took over a month to shed its kerchief here in Balsam, NC.  There's only one plant on the property like this and it's been here for more than 28 years.  There's a stalk that's probably 3 feet tall and then this bud which explodes into the shape you see here.  Maybe one of you in the Rain with the extra sensory flower powers of identification can help identify it.  Until then, I'm calling it "Ma in Her Kerchief".

Very cool flower. I have never heard of it. Do you think it would grow in the Northern region of WI? My garden would love an addition like this one. Great pictures. Call your Master Gardeners group in the area and they will be able ti identify it. Great way to make good friends.

Thanks for at least giving it a name, you know how much I dislike unidentified photos.

Good Morning Sheila, glad to make you smile.  Those photos were taken over the space of a couple of weeks so you can see that the kerchief didn't come off quickly.

Cheryl, I don't know if it would grow up there...in fact, I don't even know what it is, lol.  Good idea to ask a master gardener, I actually do know a couple.

Roger, yes I do know but then I also know you adore me!

Hi Mona,

I always wondered where she lived. < :-)  I have never seen anything like this flower. That is so cool.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Have a good day in Dillsboro.

Best, Clint McKie

Mona - I love the way you captured this flower blooming over a month to shed its kerchief! Amazing that this plant has been there for 28 years! Most perennials have a 5-7 year life span. Thanks for sharing you beautiful collage with us!

Amy, photographing flowers brings me a great deal of pleasure...knowing the names would too except I generally don't have any idea!  Thanks for your comment.

Hi Clint, yep...she lives here in Balsam, NC.  Always good to get a mystery solved, lol.

Hi Kris,  we have so many bulbs and other plants that come back year after year...we've never planted any.  Maybe all those Tree Dudes that surround the property supply the magic.

I have no idea what it is. HOnestly can't tell what I am looking at. Is that a rock behind it? Or is it part of the bloom?

Mona, dear sweet friend~I've missed connecting with you, and how (un)surprising it is to "reconnect" over nature and all her wonders! I love your new background. It may not be new, but it's been so dang long since I could say hi, that it is new TO ME. Your title, as Sheila said, captured me, too and made me smile. I just love your take on things!

Isn't there some flowerperson out there who could help?  Maybe Sharon Lee??

Than, it is the top of a concrete bird bath leaning up against a wall.

Thanks Patty, since it took so long to unfold it was pretty easy to just check in on it every couple of days.

Gayle,  you are the very first person to notice the new background...I'm not surprised because you notice all things.  It's a photo I took from the deck of our friend Emory's place in Sylva Vista.  I couldn't bear to lose the Tree Dudes though so they are now in the signature section.  Loved your post today with the deer pictures.

Hi Mona,

I also love your new blue sky background with the big tree and hills. I noticed yesterday you had all your little photos in boxes at the bottom. They are so interesting and I adore their faces! They give nature some character.

Hi Mona,

I have several "Lily of the Nile plant aka Agapanthus" and it has a flower that looks just like this. Not sure but looking similar to mine. There is a white one called White Heaven as the purple-blue color is more popular and everywhere in our area. I guess because they are so hearty.

Good Morning Roger, just so we have a clear understanding of our relationship! lol

Hi Kristin, Thanks.  I like this new look too.  The photo was taken at a really nice party, there was champagne.  I look at this scenery and the champagne memory reminds me to celebrate the views here. I'll have to google Lily of the Nile and see what comes up.
