Beginning swimming lessons for kids should be all about fun not form.

Most important, if your kids are going to be around swimming pools, rivers, creeks or the ocean, you absolutely must get them to feel comfortable in the water. And that means having fun at it!

Remember the lessons they tried to give kids and it was all about FORM? No, no, make it all about fun and the rest will come.

I was lucky enough to watch these kids being tossed into the air - "cannonballing", they called it - and jumping off the side of the pool, all with the instructors encouragement. The kids loved it!!

They were also in the water, mostly their heads under water, diving for stuff. It was all a big game and it was FUN. The result? After only a few short lessons, these little kids were all over the pool, and mostly under water.

From there? Who knows, maybe the Olympics someday?

Michelle: And the earlier the better. When my daughter was only 9 months old, I took her for swimming lessons. There was never any fear, and she swims like a fish. She is now passing that on to her kids, my grandkids.

it depends. Some kids just don't like water.

Mine do( yes, since we live close to the ocean it helped:) My girl is fearless, my son is more careful( older kids are usually more thoughtful and careful:). I never say them No or be careful( even I shrink inside sometimes!) So, they ski, swim, jump, race, etc.

That picture is great! Kid does have a bliss:)

Inna: All kids are different, that's why I advocate starting them really early. And they need to be classes with good, young, fun instructors, otherwise the fear of water of the parents can get to the kids.

Tom: You could tell the instructors had a lot of fun at it. My grandson, yep, total bliss.

This is very true. We installed an inground pool last year and while we have had "formal lessons" at the YMCA, what really got my kids swimming was my husband being in the pool shooting them into the water from his shoulders! Almost instantly they were learning to swim underwater and even attempting to stay above water.

Hella: Great post with important information.  Even in places like Phoenix, drowning is a major cause of death among children because of swimming pools.  Pools actually cause more deaths/injuries for children each year in the U.S. than handguns.  Since we're not, as a society, going to ban pools anytime soon, we should make sure our kids know how to swim!  Thanks for sharing!

Shannon: I'm so glad your kids caught onto the fun of being in the water. Andrew: how sad is that statistic and many could have been avoided. Even if you don't have a pool, kids will get into situations in other locations. Don't take the chance.

Hella, this makes me want to go swimming! Great photo and what a fun way to learn to swim. Will check it out for our grandson next year.

Frank and Sharon: I highly recommend this form of teaching kids to be comfortable in the water. They have to PLAY and have FUN with it first. How many people do we know who say "I'm not comfortable putting my face in the water?"
