Using PaintShop Pro as a Photo Editing Tool

Real Estate Agent with GreatWest Realty DRE# 00827565

PaintShop Pro is a photo or graphic editing program I have used for years, and continue to appreciate to this day.  I like the program because it often allows me to do editing that would otherwise be accomplished with PhotoShop, but I find PaintShop Pro is more user friendly.

Here’s a little trick you can accomplish with PaintShop Pro.  The original photo used for this illustration is a picture taken a few years ago of my granddaughter on a dark green couch. The original photo was cute, but her left hand was concealed in the arm of the costume.

So, what to do?  First I selected enough of that overly long sleeve to crop so it didn't look un-natural (that's why we couldn't see that hand in the first place.  Then I selected the couch and made it a solid color, so I could select it more easily later and replace with a new background.

Once this was accomplished, the magic wand tool was used to select all the solid color background, inverted the image, and copied.  Then I opened an image with the straw background, and pasted the new tiger baby onto it.

Using PaintShop Pro’s toolbar, I chose the lasso tool, and drew an outline around the right hand, selecting it.  Then on the toolbar selected “copy.”   I created a new file with a transparent background of a pixel size large enough to accommodate the copied hand.  Then I "mirrored" the hand so it would become a "left" hand, and rotated it to look natural to the stance of the left arm it was to become attached to.

To try alleviating the "floating" appearance of the baby on the straw, you can lasso little segments of the straw, and copy them, and paste as new selections along the parameter of the baby.  This makes it appear like the baby is more incorporated with the background.

I noted as an after thought the right sleeve had a cuff, that was not showing on the left arm, so I used the lasso again and selected portions of the right cuff, and pasted them onto the cuff area of the left arm. . .Voila' she now has a cuff too.

Roy - I think you will find it a lot of fun to edit using PaintShop Pro.

Lou - I'm glad you like it!  I hope you have a great weekend!

Martha - Nope, I'm no genius.  I just had the pleasure of working in a place, where I used PaintShop Pro on a number of tasks.  It's actually a really fun tool.

Joan - I don't consider myself a pro, but I've had a lot of experience with the program.

Hi Myrl,

Great job of fixing the photo. You did a good job of mirroring the hand. My friend is a photographer and she uses Photo Shop mainly and really likes it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Myrl,  you are the Pro. The picture looks perfect, if you did not show the original photo it would be unable to tell it is a fake one.

Myrl, you are so talented. I don't have PhotoShop or PaintShop, I use Gimp. But I am tempted.... Great job as always, and what an oh so cute photo!

William - The joy of using PaintShop Pro is in its simplicity.  It not an overly expensive program either.  I think Cosco has it for about $99.00 or so.

Joni - I remember looking at that photo when I first took it, and being disappointed that I hadn't noticed the missing hand.  But I was pretty content once it had been edited.

Juli - I think you will enjoy using PaintShop Pro for photo editing.  It is also the program that I use to create many of the slide shows you sometimes find on my blog.

Kristen - I like Photo Shop too.  But find it sometimes makes difficult what should be made easy.  PaintShop Pro is a simpler application to use.

John - I'm glad you like it!

Tom - I've had a lot of fun using PaintShop Pro over the years.  I know you do a little photo editing, I suspect you would enjoy it too!

Kwee - I am hopeful this little tutorial will illustrate what is possible with a picture that every once in awhile needs a little help:-)

Andrea - Photo Shop is considerably more expensive than Paint Shop Pro.  I haven't used Gimp, so can't really compare the programs with it.  However, I think Paint Shop Pro is not prohibitive in cost and worth the price.

Gary - I have been amazed at many of the free on-line editors, Ribbet, IPiccy, etc.  But still there are things I like to do that they won't do.  Paint Shop Pro enhances the capacity to do quite a bit more.

Irene - I have spent a lot of rainy days playing with the program.  Unfortunately, we are having 100+ degree heat in Sacramento right now, so a rainy day seems far on the horizon.

Myrl - I've been using Photoshop and Photoshop Elements for years, but I can't do what you just did with PaintShop Pro.  That's fantastic.  I know this can be done with Photoshop, but finding the time to learn how to do it is hard.  It's not an intuitive program that you can just play around with, unfortunately.

Gail - I have both those programs too.  And I can't easily do what I was able to accomplish here with PaintShop Pro.  You're right, Photoshop is not as intuitive.  It makes difficult, what often should be easy.

Laura - I'm one of those people that learns best in the dead of winter, when there seems to be a little more free time.
