The most boring blog ever! Or is it?

My voice is still gone. So what to do? Start writing a blog and see where it takes me. How about neighbors?

I recently house-sat for a friend who went out of the country. This townhouse was part of a planned community where people lived pretty close to each other. It was an eye opener for me because I live in a sprawling place in the middle of a forest. There are neighbors, but we:

1. pretty much look out for each other, especially when strangers appear in the area,

2. try to be sensitive to noise levels,

3. help each other out when something needs to be fixed or lifted,

4. put out the flag, halloween pumpkin and Christmas lights when the season indicates it.

5. are NEVER obviously nosy, but the "coconut wireless" is pretty active.

And at my friend's townhouse:

1. You may as well be in New York, no one knows each other really well. Guess "good party walls make good neighbors".

2. The neighbor's dog barks incessently for hours on end, no one says anything. Or was I the only one working from home?

3. But just try to hang the "nonconforming" light ficture on the front door, and get a letter from the HOA the next day. (I am not saying it's bad since that is the nature of the townhouse, still, you know you are being watched VERY CLOSELY.)

I am so glad to be back home in my laid-back place. It's apple season so bears come through the neighbors yard at night, and deer show up at dusk and dawn. My yellow lab chased one this morning.

PS. Hope my voice is back on Monday, this laryngitis sucks! Hope the blog wasn't TOO bad. I have been trying to get one done a day.

Thank you, Barbara. I'm a fan of your blogs too.

Laura: I spent a lot of time with that poor lonely barking dog...over the fence. Thank heavens my dogs have a lot of space to roam.

Hella~ I enjoyed it.  We live in a planned community and neighbors are a cross between yours and your friends.  We've got some good, some not so good.  :-)

Hella - I'm amazed we have any condo communities in the U.S. at all.  Communal living just doesn't go with our independence of spirit.  I've known some people who moved into condos and had to move back out because they couldn't deal the close proximity of other people.  Makes you really appreciate where you live, right?  Hope your voice returns soon.  Very hard to do real estate without a voice!

Hella, I live in a downtown townhouse, and we still get lots of dear, raccoons and possums.  And we all look out for each other and try not to be too noisy.  And if this was a suburban planned community, I'd have a violation sticker on my front door because I really need to cut the grass!

Donna: Sounds like you have a perfect balance.

Gail: You need to take a trial run somehow before you commit to condo living full time, I think. If you are retired and don't want to feel lonely, or if you travel a lot or it's your second home and need the security, then a condo would fill the bill. Like you, I need space. That's the fun part of real estate, to match people up with their perfect home. (Voice is still gone, 3rd day. Argh...)

Patricia: Sounds like you found the perfect place to live in a downtown area.

Nothing like time away to make you appreciate home. Our kids get frustrated living "out in the middle of nowhere" and enjoyed our vacation to the city where there was so much going on all the time. I revel in the peace and quiet of home!

It is interesting how one adapts so quickly to a lifestyle. I like having neighbors who care, wave when they drive by, and will keep an eye out when they think you're not around, as well.

Gretchen: Probably "vacation" makes the difference too. I'm with you, when I get away, it's to peace and quite where I can think and really get a lot of work done. Too much happening around me distracts me.
