Wordless Wednesday: Hands Up, Pants Down!

Arizona cactus come in all shapes, sizes and positions - especially the Saguaro Cactus.  Though most cactus at this stage of "falling apart" are usually laying on the ground - this one was still standing - and looked to me like it might be giving up the standing upright fight!

Facts About The Saguaro Cactus (from the Arizona Desert Museum):

Saguaros are found exclusively in the Sonoran Desert.

Life Span

With the right growing conditions, it is estimated that saguaros can live to be as much as 150-200 years old.

Size

Saguaro grow slow! One that is 2 inches tall could have taken 10 years to grow that length. Saguaro grow somewhere between 40-60 feet tall and when the saguaro is fully hydrated it can weigh between 3200-4800 pounds.

Other-facts

  • Most of the saguaros roots are only 4-6 inches deep and radiate out as far from the plant as it is tall.

  • After the saguaro dies, the woody ribs can be used to build roofs, fences, and parts of furniture.

Gabrielle,

What an interesting blog.  The cactus in the photo does look mighty tired and I also didn't know the history of the saguaros cactus. Thanks for posting
