Mason Neck State Park Lorton VA Respite From A Long Week

Mason Neck State Park -Cindy Jones

Mason Neck State Park along with the Elizabeth Hartwell National Wildlife Refugee combine to create close to 2000 acres of tranquility within 15 minutes of the bustling community of Lorton VA and Fort Belvoir.  The park sits on a peninsula of land with three bodies of water, Pohick Bay, Belmont Bay and the Potomac River creating the shorelines.

The Mason Neck peninsula is named after George Mason who's home Gunston Hall is just a across the road from the park.  Originally the area was part of a 5,000 acre corn and tobacco plantation. Regular visistors to the area included George Washington who lived just few miles down river at Mount Vernon.

The area is known as one of the most prominent Bald Eagle nesting grounds in our area.   This morning heading out for an early walk before the predicted rainstorm we only saw one Bald Eage.  However we were treated to an array of butterflies, frogs and turtles enjoying the wetland portion of the park.

Taking a walk along the trails at Mason Neck State Park is a great way to unwind after a long week.  Hope you have a great Sunday.

Good shot of that butterfly. Is it a tiger stripe? (Just making up a name.)  :-)

Cindy,

Great shot of that swallowtail butterfly, I found one when we were in Virginia, way down by the Chesapeake bay visitng our clients.  We both loved being there, the scenery was exquisite and impressionistic.  The seafood was definitely something to write about.  A

Alexandra-it's a good time of year to find Butterflies in VA.  There were loads of them yesterday in Mason Neck State Park.
