When Realtors Attack...

I'll never forget the phone call I received from Mr. Angry Agent.  There was a miscommunication about a showing on one of his listings, and he wasn't happy.  Not at all.

I answered the phone and he started SCREAMING at me with a lot of profanity thrown in there as well.

I hung up on him.

He called me back screaming again, but this time he asked me if I hung up on him.  I calmly said yes, and that if was ready to talk to me in a civil tone, I would talk.

More screaming.  More profanity.  I hung up again.

It was almost comical.

The third time he called me he was calm, and we talked about the situation, and got on the same page.  Sometimes the real estate profession can be tough and often times it's stressful.  That said, you have to keep your cool out there.  What does screaming and yelling prove?

Was this guy trying to intimidate me?  Maybe.  But it didn't work.  All he did was make himself look like a fool.

What have you done in this situation?  Hang up?  Yell back?  Laugh?  Be careful out there.  Sometimes Realtors do attack!  :)

Hanging up is the best solution I think. I am not going to yell at another agent and I won't communicate with one yelling either. I did ask an agent one time if she was born this way or had life just made her bitter. That received no reply. Yelling back is of no use.

I would have handled this "Agent Attack" the same way you did because screaming back isn't an option.  I don't want to stress myself out if I can avoid it.

Have wonderful holiday weekend.

These people who yell are in a very bad frame of mind indeed--They need compassion not anger in return! I have let someone who is yelling at me rant--they can rant as long as their voice holds up and then, when they pause, I say something like: "I am sorry for your dismay and anger--I did nothing to deserve your rage so if you don't mind, please tell me who did so that I can help you get past this." You would be amazed at the reaction. I have had an immediate appology; I have had a "Pardon me" and then a hang up; and I have had someone break down in tears! Never had a re-do of the yelling and in fact have made a friend or two by this method! Don't forget--we are living in a very stressful time and the next person who yells could be you!!!

Sorry, just had to comment on the great number of comments on your very timely post--Isn't it fascinating that so many people feel they have something to contribute to this matter? It is a matter that we are all familiar with because it is a sign of distress. Many people are experiencing distress right now.

LOL, I had that happen to me once and I also just hung up. The caller also called back yelling even more and asked me if I had the "audacity" (different wording used) to hang up on me. I said yes and said that this is how I did it. I hung up again. The third time, he called I let him say anything he wanted. He ranted and he raved and used words even I didn't think could be strung together. I said nothing. When he was finished and asked if I was still there, very quietly I said to him" Listen. Don't ever talk to me like that. Remember that I'm a &^%*ing lady, you #$%*!".  Dead silence. Then he started to laugh and I started to laugh and we were both professionals again.

It's crazy Paula!  I've had a few other posts get this kind of traction as far as hits, but this is the most comments I have ever recieved on a post.  Very thankful, and yeah, I think I hit a nerve with some people.  :)

I agree! I've had that happen to me as well, and I basically tried to stay calm and continue to talk, but sometimes that's very hard. I think we as agents need to remember that we are all under stress in this business and we all work for the same 'team'...so to try and take a team approach instead of a 'me vs you' approach would go a long way to making all of our jobs a little easier :-)

Hey Jared, to even read that a few felt you were in the wrong is mind boggling. Being screamed at is not something to put up with. As agents, our time is crunched and we don't have the time to listen to someone who is acting like a child. You gave him a warning that if he kept it up you would hang up and you did just that. Being verbally abused in any fashion is not acceptable. I guess those who felt it's ok are not the confrontational type.

It is amazing how other agents will talk to their colleagues in the this industry. I find it more with older agents to me and you're far more civil than myself :D

There is absolutely no reason or excuse for another agent to call another and yell. Cursing is unprofessional and shows a lack of proper upbringing and class. I am capable of mistakes and I am fine with being informed that I have run a foul of another person. I will not tolerate anyone treating me in an unprofessional manner. I don't call and yell or curse at anyone and there is no way I will put up with it. If they cannot communicate in a professional manner they don't deserve a conversation. Hang up and be done with them.

Yes my agents and I would get one of these idiots every couple of years. In my early small office I had a machine that recorded all calls, the agent could stop it and not record, but it gave the required beeps because in my state both parties had to consent to record but the beeps gave notice and was acceptable.

Well I got the most obnoxious call I have ever gotten in my life and it was recorded. I had my wife type up the transcript and we placed an ad in the local paper with the full transcript saying when we serve you we are prepared to shield you from people like so and so with so and so company. We actually got a few listings from it,  and a denial from the agent that he said those things so I played the recording for the folks at the board who had taken his complaint. He earned a nickname among board members that took him a decade to sort of lose.

Excellent post.  As a retired servicemember, I have not often encountered this kind of behavior from other Realtors.  I was told by another Realtor, that my presence can be very menacing.  I treat others with respect.  I cannot Imagine being yelled at in the way described.  I would probably have paid that Realtor a personal visit. And no..I do not get intimidated

Screaming and profanity prove something - that the person is unprofessional, out of control, and not worth speaking with. Hanging up was exactly right.

I have dealt with some VERY nasty Realtors(r) and fairy recently. Fortunately, this is more of a rare circumstance. Most of us know how to act.

I think my reaction would depend on how MY day went. Hang up if I had a bad day, wait it out till he is finished if I feel particularly "centered". It's a bit like dealing with a 3 year old having a temper trantrum. Time out!

As a property manager, I was given the RIGHT to hang up on people early in my career and I only use it occasionally and usually when someone is too irate to be understood.

Hanging up under the circumstances was probably justified, sitting in silence waiting for him to finish is not my idea of productive use of time.

I just think that this kind of behaviour is totally out of line. Fortunately I have never encountered this kind of behaviour. Agents on the islands seem to be a little more mellow... Aloha!

You actions spoke well of your professionalism. You hung up when Mr. Angry overstepped his bounds. You took the second call and told the truth about hanging up and why. And then you took the third call. All those steps demonstrated your willingness to negotiate for your client. Well done!
