What In The World Are You Wearing?

What In The World Are You WearingI am of the opinion that real estate agents are business professionals and as such should dress the part.

I Know There Are Exceptions

Before you start telling me all the reasons you dress the way you do, I want you to know that I know there are exceptions.  I understand completely that you will not have on a good pair of slacks or nice shoes at a home inspection.  I understand that in warmer climates the "dress code" can be a bit more relaxed.  I get that, but those should be the exceptions and not the rule.

People Do Judge You

As much as you may think it's unfair, people will judge you based on what you are wearing.  We all know that you should not judge a book by its' cover, but it's done all the time.  If someone walks into your office to make what is probably the largest purchase of their life, do you really think they want to see a real estate agent walk out in shorts and flip flops?  I don't think so.  When you are in the office, on desk duty or meeting clients for the first time you should be dressed appropriately.   That means slacks, a collared shirt or blouse, a polo shirt, hard shoes...I think you get the idea.

You Can Change It Up

Once you have met with the client a few times you may want to mirror their style of dress; meaning if they are super casual, than you can be casual (notice I didn't say you can be "super casual").  If they are more formal, than you are more formal.

The Power Of Looking Good

The bottom line is this, when you look good, you feel good.  When you look good, you carry yourself differently.  When you look good you don't have an issue running off to an unexpected showing. When you look good, you are ready to conduct business, without hesitation.  You always want to be ready when opportunity knocks.

Good morning Candy,

I learned a long time ago in automobile sales that I lost a client because I was dressed down and in the dealership. Now when I go out I am always dressed as if I was conducting business.

Make yourself a great day.

Candy you are right on the money about dressing for success - i have to admit that there has been a day or two when Irma and I took some time off and were in casual clothes and had a buyer say they just had to see this house as soon as possible - and we did show it while in 'Saturday' I am not working clothes...but normally we will be professionally dressed

I have to agree that it is important to be ready and dressed professionally. Really falls in line with taking care of yourself and carry yourself with dignity and respect. Sometimes when we're out in the field, we come across prospects and it's always important to dress as if you are ready to make a good first impression. Great post!

Candy, I agree with you.  We can be tempted to dress down during the summer, but I have always felt better wearing a nice dress or a well cut pair of slacks and a good blouse.  We can be comfortable and still look like we are ready for business.  One of my younger clients said to me recently at the home inspection (where I was wearing jeans), "Ms. Tonya, we didn't think you ever wore casual clothes"!
