Prayers for Devon Walker...and perspective for the rest of us

Devon Walker injured

Tulane Green Wave Safety Devon Walker profile

Like many of you, I'd never heard of Devon Walker before yesterday- but I'll say my second set of prayers for him tonight just the same.

If you haven't heard the story, the links above will give you a good feel for what happened to him in Tulane's loss to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. The score was 45-10, though I'd bet few if any folks in the stadium really care. What matters most is how quickly this molecular biology major can get up and walk again.

You see, Walker sustained a serious injury from a helmet-to-helmet collision with a teammate- fracturing his neck/spine and puncturing a lung. It was a heck of a hit with results that have not yet been determined (that's where the prayers come in, you know).

"But Dennis- what does this have to do with the real estate business?", you might ask. Well, a lot.

Though horrific, it's accidents like this that serve to put things in perspective for us- or at least they should.

As I often say, we're not curing cancer when we help someone buy, sell or lease a place, folks. It's easy to get caught up in a moment (or a few of them), and to start thinking we're a lot more important than we really are for simply driving some folks around, talking to folks and pushing some papers around on a desk.

No, accidents like this make us appreciate each other more- make us love our loved ones a little more- or at least they should. And they help me remember that above all, should I be fortunate enough to be elected to fill a seat on our ORRA Board of Directors for 2013 in a couple of weeks, it's a duty to people that I'll be charged to keep, along with being trusted to treat everyone as best I can.

Prayers for Devon Walker...and perspective for the rest of us

Dennis- I heard about young Devon and my heart goes out for this young man.  My husband and I had the opportunity to visit the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and were humbled and amazed.  My prayers will definitely include Devon.

Hi, Kathy:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  I write this as I sit here in the waiting room at our Orlando VA Medical Center.  I'm thankful for this place for a couple of reasons.  Firstly, I have a neurologist that is world-class and on par with any ottthersone might name.  Though the overall VA health care system leads much to be desired- and serves as a great Obamacae example, though I digress- there truly are great doctors within the system.  Perhaps more importantly, though, this place is humbling and grounding for me.  It provides visible, tangible examples of America's heroes and the suffering many have endured- and continue to endure after serving to keep our great nation free.  It is these great folks- some who walk, others who can't- that provde me with a great deal of inspiration and serve as a reminder that life's not fair but one should never give up because that's so.
