LBJ Expressway Construction Update for North Texas Drivers.

Our Keller Williams office hosted the North Dallas MLS meeting this morning. Diane Ledford arranged to get Andy Ritter, Director of Corporate Affairs for the LBJ Infrastructure Group, LLC to speak.Andy Ritter

Here is some interesting information from Andy's presentation:

  • When LBJ Freeway, also known as 635, opened in 1969, it handled 180,000 cars per day. By 2009, there were 270,000 cars per day.
  • By December, 2013, the Montfort Road to Greenville Avenue portion of the construction will be completed.
  • All construction is scheduled to be completed by 2016.
  • Even though construction will be over, this is a 52 year project. Control returns to the Department of Transportation in 2061. Until then, his company will maintain the structures and pavement, respond to accidents and provide motor vehicle assistance.
  • Construction costs are estimated at $2.7Billion.
  • There are 5-6 accidents or breakdowns per day on LBJ.
  • The amount of the tolls on the toll lanes will be variable and based on demand. As demand increases, the price to ride on the toll portions will increase.
  • If speeds drop below 50 mph on the toll portion, the developer will incur penalties.
  • The toll lanes will be in the center of the highway, with elevated non-toll lanes to each side.
  • Several overpasses have already been completed and are open, including the Joe Ratliff bridge and Welch Road.
  • Underpasses (like at Midway Road) will take longer to complete.
  • The ramps at Hillcrest Road are now permanently closed.

There is a wealth of information on the website and you can even sign up for text alerts to your cell phone. Check out the detour maps and follow the progress.

This much-needed widening project will alleviate traffic problems along the east-west portion of LBJ. Until then, think about taking the surface streets!

Lorrie:  This is very helpful.  I was not in DFW in 1969... so I missed all the fun of building LBJ.  But I WAS here for all of the fun of widening 75 from two lanes to it's present width.  That was a real picnic, as well... but was nothing as massive as what is happening to LBJ right now.  Thanks so much for the update.

And yes... with all of this crazy'ness going on... it sure is a great idea to both live and work in Addison... don't you agree ?  :)

Karen Anne: I also remember the I-35E construction VERY well as a grad student commuting from Dallas to Denton. Oy!

Lorrie:  Wow... I hadn't even thought of that.  I-35.  Wow... that should have been some mess.  The only saving grace for you, I am sure, is that during the construction of I-35... that the automobile had not yet been invented.  Yeah... I remember that, as well.

I think the auto was invented somewhere around 1900.  Uh huh... I was in my mid-30's then... and very saddle-sore from all that horse-back riding.  Whew!  And yes, I am THAT old!

You said Denton.  University of North Texas... or Texas Woman's University ?

I-35 was a big mess for ALL the years I was a student there (1979 to 1984). TWU PhD grad.  Granted, I was ABD for many of those years, but still had to make the commute. I lived in Denton the first 14 months, then fled to Addison.

Additional Information

Ah, Addison! Not a city, but a "town." The Town of Addison. The best place to live and work in North Texas. There's something to be said about a place that doesn't take itself too seriously. Note the exclamation point in the town's name. Here you'll find the ruminations, rants and raves of one of the town's realtors and residents.
