Alameda Theatre Classic Movie Series

Alameda Theatre

The Classic Film Series at the Alameda Theatre is back.  The classic films will be screened on Tuesday and Wednesday.  The first film of the fall series is The Manchurian Candidate which will screen Wednesday and Thursday, September 26 and 27 at 1:30 pm, 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm. I love the film.

I have seen the Manchurian Candidate repeatedly on TV because it so good,  but I have never seen it on the big screen.  According to Alameda Theatre’s publicity, “This 1962 drama is an unusually tense and intelligent political thriller that was a film far ahead of its time. Its themes of thought control, political assassination, and multinational conspiracy were hardly common currency in 1962, and while its outlook is sometimes formed by Cold War paranoia, the film seemed nearly as timely when it was reissued in 1987 as it did on its original release.”  The cast is sensational and includes Frank Sinatra, Angela Lansbury, in a very scary role, Janet Leigh, Laurence Harvey, Henry Silva and James Gregory.  The Manchurian Candidate was directed by John Frankenheimer.

Many of the films shown in the Classic Movie Series were Academy Award winners.  Show times vary by film, but you can catch either a matinee or evening showing.  Be sure to buy the Classic Movie Passes you will save money by buying the 8 Classic Films for $40, or 4 for $25. The full schedule is filled with great, can miss films:

  • The Seven Year Itch...................October 2 and 3
  • Gone with the Wind...................October 9 and 10
  • The Pride of the Yankees ...........October 16 and 17

Evelyn, that is quite a lineup of movies. The Classic Movie Passes are also very reasonable. Everyone should see these classics on the big screen.

If they price this right, add popcorn, drinks and goodies that are reasonable, have volunteers man the concession stands...this could be a huge hit...

I've seen all of those but I'll bet they're a lot more fun to see on a full sized movie screen.

Looks like this is a great film festival of really great classics-Angela Lansbury was extraordinary in this film and the remake could not hold a candle!

Tom:  And I plan to see all of them.

Michael: You are so right.  I can't wait til Wednesday.

Vanessa:  The movies are just different, but I do love some of the wonderful French dramas and of course the English films are fun to see.

Harry:  that would be me and my husband.

Richie: The popcorn and drinks are not reasonable.  But hey it is only money.

Joan:  I do too, and to see a movie that I really like, it is a good thing.

Roger: Some of my favorites too.

Bryan:  I think so, and the movies will be shown on the original 1932's theatre.

Sandy:  I checked with the owner and he said he couldn't bring the movies to you.  When you are in Alameda next, I'll take you to the movies.

JoAnn: She was scary.  She was so cold and calculating.

Ginger:  Good movies all.

Evelyn:  Hmmm... I was thinking how very nice it would be to have a Classic Movie Series going on in Fort Worth... and then I see Harry in #4 mentioning how nice it would be to take an "older loved one" to see these movies.

Wow.  Hey Harry... I can make it on my own, thank you very much.  No need for the gurney or the EMT truck.  Whew.  Am I really THAT old?  LOL.

Evelyn, that looks like a lot of fun, and that is a great list of movies.  My wife would love to see the Manchurian Candidate.  She's a huge Angela Landsbury fan.

Karen:  You are probably correct.  Those youngsters out to see some of the classic movies.

Mike:  Angela Lansbury's role in the Manchurian Candidate is not her usual sunny role.  She is definitely not nice.
