Dryer vents and why they don't work.

Dryer vents and why they don't work.

There has been a rash of bad dryer vents lately. These dryer vents need to be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. There are big issues that can come from a bad dryer vent being left in operation

( or in many cases not in proper operation)

Follow this link for more information. Dryer vents cause fires.

These vents can cause a house fire when your not home. How many of you had started the dryer just to run to town or leave the home to run an errand. Mean while the dryer is on and heating up.

This is why the dryer vents need to operate properly.

Here is a dryer vent that has been stuffed full of insulation. And the reason being? This vent is no longer in use. So why did'nt the sellers remove the vent? Could it be there was a gas line right in front of the vent?

 Dryer vent hood stuffed full.

In this picture the dryer vent is so badly caked with with lint. The back flow preventer will not operate as it should.

Bad flapper valve. Lint build up bad.

Broken back flow flapper.

You can see the feces of the insects that have been in and around the vent.

Keep your dryer vents in good working order. If not there may be a few unwanted guests in your home.

At Desert Sun Home Inspections, we strive to bring the best home inspection and home safety to the client.

Have a great day everyone.

Good afternoon Clint.

I would recommend cleaning the vent once a year.

A great post indeed.

Clint -- that is a great assemblage of pictures showing various ways these vents can be messed up.  It is a shame that people don't think to take care of them, though since most are out of sight, they are probably forgotten - until too late.

Those pictures tell a compelling story.  Another is that dryers won't work right or overwork to dry when vents aren't clear.  I did a detailed cleaning of my vent but it was well worth the hour long project.

Clint, good advice. About two months ago, a house on my street caught fire because the dryer vent had been re-routed thru the garage, and destroyed the house.

The potential for fire is so obvious. I am not sure why anyone would neglect this.

Clint, I never leave anything running when I am not at home … ever.  If I run to the store, I turn off anything that may be running.  I know that most people don’t think about what’s running … they just go about doing what they need to do.  Dryer vents are one of the many ignored items that need routine maintenance.

Heat loss and cold air intrusion through dryer vents when not used causes draft, waste of energy for sure.

Hello Everyone.

This was a really good response to the post.

Dryer vents are the leading cause for home fires in the U.S.A.

Follow this post to find out more about how to check and make your home safer from a dryer vent fire.

I want to thank each and every one of you the comments. There has been way too many homes lost to dryer vent fires. All of these losses could have been prevented.

Have a great day everyone.

All my Best, Clint McKie

Yeah, so you say, but at least they used good drywall screws to install that last vent!

I had one the other day, unused for some time, but it was a hole completely open to the outdoors!

Good post Clint.

Hi Jay,

And when they remove the vent they can reuse the screws as well.

How ingenuous, multiple use screws.

Have a great day in Bristow.

Best, Clint McKie
