Water Walk With Me

A favorite spot at the Seattle Center for me is the space between McCaw Hall and the Exhibition Hall. It’s one of the main entrances into the center from the north of Mercer Street. Between the two buildings there’s 3 huge rectangles each with a thin sheet of water running over it. I’m guesstimating they're about 15’ wide by 50’ long.

The surface has to be ever so consistently flat and slightly tilted to create these perfectly distributed sheets of water. It’s kind of mind boggling and amazing at the same time when you contemplate the amount of space your looking at then realize the water is only about an 1/8th of an inch thick.

But who cares about the science, it’s a total magnet for kids. It doesn't matter what time of year it is, hot or cold, rain or shine, you’ll almost always find some young one’s thrilled to walk it end to end. I especially enjoy those times I get to witness the awe of a first discovery.

between Exhibition Hall and McCaw Hall at the Seattle Center.

Notice the giant curtains like framed fishing net hanging over the square. On a beautiful day like today they filter the sunlight which creates a subtle yet magical lighting of the space. If you’re wondering the answer is yes, of course I did. Come on... water walk with me.

Only kids would want to walk in the water on a cold day but it sounds like a lot of fun.

I think those are great "experience" locations that should be shared.

Hi Cindy... Yep, only kids would... I was down last winter and it was snowing lightly and this little girl about 4 years old just had to walk through it. She was so cute all wrapped up with her bright yellow rubber hightop boots on!

Hi Kathy... they are and I'm always so delighted when people and kids stop, take a look around, and enjoy them for what they are for a few minutes.

It is projects like that, which make Seattle a world class city!  I'll never forget when I visited London, and saw my first spray park outside the classic Courtauld Art Gallery.  Totally amazing!

Water. Kids and adults both folks to the gently soothing of it's sound and calling! I can hear my water fountain now and it's always so refreshing. Gorgeous scene Rene! Gives everyone a space to just stop all the chatter and just be.....ahhhhhh

Myrl: I have to get to London... I so want to go! So many things I cherish in life have such a big connection. Thanks!

Anna: Yes the "ahhhhhh" factor". That's what I love about it too. Something, unspoken happens, there's a feeling about, can't explain... but it's there... and "ahhhhhh"...

It does look like it would be fun to do whether you are a kid or adult but I would want to do it in summer. It is an amazing area.

Kristin: It's so shallow, an 8th of an inch, yet profound. Though, I havn't been there when it's actually freezing! That might be a liability! Yet, I love everytime I come here and watch the kids discover!

The thing about London, was that it wasn't on my top 10 destinations to visit.  However, my daughter attended a psychology conference there in 2006, and I went along.  Those connections you talk about, I didn't even know existed for me.  Yet, they were on nearly every street corner.  London is much more than an amazing city.  It's a monument!
