Real estate agents working hours

I just read an article in the California Association of realtors magazine on top producing agents. All of the agents interviews say they work at least 70 hours a week. I have done this for years and thought I was unique. It seems this is part of the business. I learned many years ago to answer the phone 7 days a week from at least 7 am to 8 pm. If people try to reach you and cannot, they will call someone else. Many times the issues clients call with are easily handled, but many clients will not wait and do nothing. Many times once they start trying to 'fix' issues, the issues get worse not better and are harder and more time consuming to solve. It is way easier to deal with issues as they come.

I get up by 6 am and am at the office by 7 am. I work in the office until 2-3 pm and then do my errands to homes until around 45 pm. I arrive home and check my email and facebook. I then cook dinner and after dinner answer messages again.

The smartphone really helps throughout the day to answer calls, texts, and emails, so that when I arrive home, I have less to do and less messages to answer.

I am pretty much "on call" 7 days a week, but definitely not 24 hours a day - I set my limits, which are reasonable.  My goal has always been to earn my 6 figures annually with the least amount of hours worked.  If I truly worked 70 hours a week I'd be a stressed out zombie.

When my son worked the night shift we spent a lot of time doing things with the grandkids during the day.  I worked around our fun times and of course got yelled at (jokingly) when having to take a phone call, but it was always understood.  My best year ever, where I did 12 million in sales on my own, was the year I took 5 vacations.

I have a system and I now have my husband and daughter on my team.  I am still the hub and do the coordinating and client communicating, but my husband really helps out and my daughter is now allowing us to visit our 2nd home in AZ for a longer time period - and we can "keep it in the family" instead of me having to bring in another agent while we're away.

Lori, I agree, you have to work long hours, be available 7 days and be very flexible with your hours to sell real estate.  The thing is, for the most part, you can adjust your hours to your liking.  You can also do some work while you are at home watching TV or other chores such as laundry.  I haven't been selling real estate too long and I'm only working about 55 hours a week right now.  I do know, once I get busier, I will be working more, but I am happy with it.  I have found that I have about the same amount of free time as I did when I was working a straight 40 hour a week job.

Sometimes it's 70 hours a week, sometimes less.  It helps to be organized and focused when you are working.  When the burn out feeling comes on, time to take a break.

There's got to be a better income earning opportunity for any agent who labors 70 hours a week to earn $100k annually, isn't there? That's just $28 per hour and if you're earning $75k, it's $21 per hour and at $50k it's a whopping $14 per hour, working only 50 weeks annually, go figure.

I remember trying to work out the details of a deal while visiting my sick/dying father.  I was both grateful that I help take care of my clients, even though I was over a thousand miles away, and mad at myself from taking time away from Dad.  Fortunately, the issue did not take long, so I was able to spend time with Dad and get the deal to close on time.

I can't believe Realtors love to boast about how many hours a week they log.

I started in Real Estate 7 years ago so that I could be home with my kids more as I became a single mom to two young kids.  I left a well paying job as a Regional Manager for a Medical supply company.  I am so happy to say that I make a great income and only work about 30-35 hours per week and sometimes less. Of course, there are those times when I have 6 contracts going at once and have to work more.  I"m sorry that so many Realtors are proud of working 60-70 hours per week. I am so very proud of NOT having to work 40 hours per week, have a great quality of life and still love my job.  My clients will tell you that I always return calls promptly, do what I say I am going to and deliver great customer service.

Honestly, life is WAY too short to work so hard.  At my memorial service some day, I do not want friends and family to say,..."She was a really hard worker and dedicated to her job."  I do want them to say what a great mom, friend, daughter and business owner she was."

I think you do what you have to do to be successful. I'm a new agent and just plugging along. Yesterday, I left my house at 7 am, showed my first house at 8 am, worked on lead generation, getting back to clients, and contacting other agents during the day, finally showed a house in the rain at 6:30 in the evening and wrote up an offer. I walked in the door to my home at 9 pm. The funny thing is, I honestly didn't feel like I was working. Clients are very busy too, and if you don't work with their schedule they will find someone who will. I also learned in my last career that it doesn't matter how many hours you work, or the amount of money you make, what is really important is that you are happy with what you are doing and have the time to enjoy your life. If I can enjoy every minute of a 14 hour day at work, what more can I ask for.

The best part...we get to make the hours work for us. It is not unusual to go to a movie in the middle of the day, go out to lunch with hubbiy, visit with a friend when they call. It is also not unusual to work many hours when we need to get a transaction done. Margaret

Lori - Some thoughts on this.  If your only ambition is to make as much money as you can, then being available from 7 AM through 8 PM 7 days a week is the way to go.  My hours during the week are 8 AM until I'm done, which is sometimes not until 10 PM.  On Saturdays, I'm available from 10 AM until 5 PM, and on Sundays, it's a very small window... 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM.

People have to learn that there are limitations to what you can ask an agent to do.  I'm sure that these people that have no problem calling their agent at 7 AM on a Sunday wouldn't be as happy about it if you called them at 7 AM on a Sunday when they were trying to get a little extra sleep.

No one likes to feel as if they're being taken advantage of, and the old saying still applies:  "No one can take advantage of you without your permission!"

My husband and I also work many, many more hours than 40 per week - I don't log them so don't know for sure.  But on the other side of it I can do a lot of stuff with my daughter during the day and catch up in the evening, so I am often working late into the night to catch up.  But, we also were out of town for about 4 1/2 weeks this year - we do work if needed on vacation, usually a fewl hours per day- but the fact that we are able to do this with our career makes it worth working those 70-80 hrs per week when we are here and need to. -Kasey
