Today, October 14, 2012 is the 52nd Birthday of the Peace Corps
by Michelle Carr-Crowe, Silicon Valley guide and real estate agent
Fifty-two years ago today, on October 14, 1960, then-Senator John F. Kennedy inspired a 10,000-student strong crowd at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor when he first described his vision of a Peace Corps during a presidential campaign speech.
The students immediately took action, further empowering Kennedy's fledgling idea, with a petition signed by 1,000 students stating they were willing to serve abroad in such a capacity.
Soon after taking office as the President of the United States, and less than 6 months from its first mention, President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961.
