How many people move to or leave Seattle each year?

The IRS has compiled an interactive migration map that shows how many people are leaving and coming from one year to other.  The IRS estimates that 40 million Americans move from one home to another every year.

The interactive map is a good tool for looking at the 5 year trends in the boom and bubble housing markets and effect the Great Recession had on migration around the country. And as the economy improves people are on the move again, young people will move to areas where housing is affordable and jobs are plentiful while older adults are looking for places less expensive.

2010

974 people moved from San Diego (California) to King County (Greater Seattle, WA.), 1060 people moved from Seattle to San Diego.

344 people from San Bernardino County (California) to Greater Seattle, 429 left Seattle and moved to the San Bernardino area.

This map really shows an insight into who's moving where.  From the short time I had playing around with it, it looks like Seattle has a new resident for everyone that finally has had enough of the weather and bounced.

I would bet the trend is stronger about moving here than away. At least it's been that way in the past. Thanks for the post and congratulations on your feature!

Very interesting indeed.  Thurston County's numbers are pretty high due to Joint-Base Lewis McChord as we have many military families who live in Thurston County instead of Pierce County.
