Victorian in Alameda Stick-Eastlake Style

The striking thing about the Stick-Eastlake Style of Victorian is its angular appearance.  There is a pleasing symmetry to the homes. There are straight lines, right angles and stick like applied ornaments adorning Stick homes.  The slanted bay windows of the Italianate style are replaced with rectangular box bay windows sometimes topped with fake gables. Compared to the Italianate structures, Stick-Eastlake homes felt almost modern.

The Stick houses were built in the 1880’s and were characterized by a large, ornamental truss under the gable eaves of a house, and square bays, flat roof lines and free-style decorations. The decoration, roof line and eaves focused attention to the patterns and lines of the homes.

Eastlake houses were named after the British furniture designer for Queen Victoria, Charles Eastlake. The English Eastlake style featured more decoration styling than our Eastlake style. The Eastlke and Stick styles merged to be called "Stick-Eastlake."  The Eastlake style with ornamental decorative design elements such as sunbursts, flowers, foliage, spindles and columns contributed more decorative detailing to the very plaint Stick.

About 500 Stick style homes were built in Alameda in the ‘80’s and presently about 500 remain standing.

Alameda is a wonderful island community, with its tree lined streets, pleasant neighborhoods, great schools and lovely architecture.  Named one of the best placed to live by Money Magazine, Alameda has a small town feel, a high median family income, a large number of educational institutions nearby, wonderful climate with excellent air quality and more than double the number of restaurants and libraries compared to other communities of a similar size and location.  I write about events, businesses, restaurants and items of interest to Alamedans. Evelyn, they are beautiful.  The Victorian style home is my favorite.  The Shenandoah Valley has a lot of them, and most of the ones you see will be in the same condition as they day they were originally finihed.  The folks around here love to keep them consistent with the time.

Evelyn, Victorian is one of my favorite historic styles of homes. Thanks for the history lesson and going behind the walls.

Mike:  We have laws affecting any change that an owner may want to make to the exterior of these historic homes.  Most of the owners try to maintain the interior as the homes were originally built.  Even modernization is done with the original style in mind.

Debbie:  You are welcome.  I love these homes.  They define my city.
