Halloween Safety Reminders

It's coming up to that time of year again when our little ghosts and goblins will be running through the streets trying to collect as much candy as possible.  Here are a few reminders to help make this Halloween season a safe and happy one for everyone.

DURING TRICK-OR-TREATING:
•A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.

Remind trick-or-treaters:
•Use a flashlight, so you can see and be seen by others.
•Stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate where you are going.
•Only trick-or-treat in well-known neighborhoods and at homes that have a porch light on.
•Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.
•If no sidewalk is available, walk at the farthest edge of the roadway facing traffic and be sure to carry a flashlight or wear glow sticks so you can be seen by on coming traffic.
•Never cut across yards.
•Never enter a stranger's home or car for a treat.
•Obey all traffic and pedestrian regulations.
•Always walk. Never run across a street and be sure to look in both directions for cars.
•Remove any mask or item that will limit eyesight before crossing a street, driveway or alley.
•Do not assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing trick-or-treaters. Just because one car stops, does not mean others will stop.
•Never consume unwrapped food items or open beverages that may be offered.
•No treats should be eaten until they are thoroughly checked by an adult at home.
•Notify Police immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.

I also keep a bunch of glow sticks to give out to kids.  You can buy some of those glow-stick bracelets in 10 pack tubes for $1.  Most of the kids like them- and yes I do still give out candy.

I think glow sticks are a fabulous idea and they can really fit in with any costume.  I once made a jelly fish costume and integrated the glow sticks into the costume and it was the coolest one I've seen.

And if you think you are too old to be chaperoned by an adult, you are too old to trick or treat. It's disconcerting for a homeowner to have a group of older teenagers show up.

Great tips. I like the idea of giving away glow sticks (plus candy). It makes the kids safer and they think they're cool.

I am usually gone on Halloween to my sweetie's house but it amazes me that people still trust enough to let their kids out. Glad there is still trust.

Anymore, I just take the kids to a local trick or treat event.  We have one in the city park every year where city officials and local businesses hand out candy.  Same goes for the local theme parks.  Better than knocking on stranger's doors.

Hi June,

All good points. I especially like #5 on your trick or treat walkers along w/the glow sticks.

We still love the old fashioned way where kids come knocking at your door. Our street does have light posts and sidewalks, plus we leave our porch light on, so we still get a fair amount of kids who come by.

Thanks for the post.

Excellent post and tips for keeping our children safe. This is a great list to remind parents about Halloween and gives me an idea for marketing too.

I find it so sad that we even have to publish things like this. I used to go out for hours and no one ever worried.

It may be sad that we have to publish things like this but it is better to be safe than sorry.  Where we live parents gather kids together and go out as a group.  It's fun for everyone.

ALL are very good rules! Hard to pick out just a few to emphasize to the kids - altho "going away with strangers" and "travel in a group" would probably top the list!

Things have changed since we were young.  You have to be cautious to make sure your kids are safe.  Happy Halloween.

June - Most communities in my area have a specific day that trick or treating is allowed, and it's published in the newspaper, advertised on the radio, etc.  Most people know this and take that evening into consideration when they're zipping around the neighborhoods.
