Simon and Garfunkle Knew About Fall

By
Education & Training with House Proud Ottawa-Ontario-Canada

Today I looked out the window and saw that my favourite maple tree had lost almost all of its leaves overnight (thanks in no little part to Sandy).  I guess the leaves were ready to fall but the wind took the timing out of the hands of the tree and into the hands of a storm.  It made me think of a song I knew a long time agoe.  Here are the Simon and Garfunkle lyrics from their song "Leaves that are Green".

I threw a pebble in a brook
And watched the ripples run away
And they never made a sound.
And the leaves that are green turned to brown,
And they wither with the wind,
And they crumble in your hand.

Valerie- I love the way you put it... "the wind took the timing out of the hands of the tree".  They are so beautiful and you ust have to enoy them while they last.

Valerie- "I guess the leaves were ready to fall but the wind took the timing out of the hands of the tree and into the hands of a storm" Thought provoking! You could apply that in so many other circumstances in life.

Kathy:  I know fall is about the end of the growing season but it just seems too short.

Beth:  It relates to the expression "the best laid plans".  We really have very little control of our lives and of nature.

Valerie -- a very thought provoking post, as we consider the vicissitudes of life (weather, etc.).

I live on a street of only 8 homes....we all have the same type tree in our yard...everyone else's is still bright red, even after the storm.  My tree has been completely bare of leaves since last week!  Why my tree?  At least I still have the others to enjoy!

Valerie, The leaves have beautiful color. I am not familiar with that song or maybe I just need to hear the tune.

We lost I lots of leaves during hurricane Sandy too. Our yard is in definite need of raking. I guess I after reading your post i should have a different look at the leaves all over our yard. Thanks for sharing.

Steven:  It was a time to spend a minute in reflection.

Sharon:  Next year sneak out late at night and give your tree a lot of water.  It may do the trick and your neighbours will wonder what is your secret.

Debbie:  It was an early S&G tune that you can see on youtube and boy do they look like boys.....so young!

Valerie, very nice.  Our maple tree has now lost all of it's leaves.  Was hoping the fallen leaves would all blow away.  Alas, they didn't or if they did, we received someone else's leaves.

Valerie,

That Maple Tree saved the best of its leaves for you!

You appreciated all its splendor and captured it's final moments just beautifully! Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo and Simon and Garfunkle's words accompany it well.

Gail. Depends upon the wind direction. Our neighbours had 28 bags of leaves put out today for recycling.

Patricia. In a few weeks our world in Ottawa will be white so I especially love the fall for the colours.

Chris:

When you see Garfunkle harmonize it looks like an angel coming in on wings of musical notes.
