Getting rid of the Candy!

Halloween is over. Whether you had little ones who went out and collected a big stash or, like me, you overbought for the number of children who came to the door, many of us have a lot of candy in the house!

What are some ideas to deal with this abundance of sugar?Halloween Candy

  1. Pick through, saving only the items you like, and freeze the rest (most candy freezes very well if stored in a zip-type freezer bag).
  2. Check with local retirement homes and homeless shelters to see if they would like candy donations.
  3. Drop some off at your local firehouse or police station.
  4. Bag it up and take it  to the office. If you work from home, like I do, send it in to someone else's office. Candy and offices just go together--it usually disappears quickly!
  5. Check for local dentists and orthodontists who are collecting it. We have one local orthodontist, Dr. Tisseront, who collects candy each year  ' to benefit Children's National and our Troops overseas!!'

Do you have any ideas for other creative ways to dispose of the excess candy?

My personal advice: be sure to keep a couple of pieces around, if you have a sweet tooth, but get rid of the bulk of it...none of us need all that ugar as we get within a month of Thanksgiving!

I hope your Halloween was happy and safe!

Extra halloween candy usually just lies around my house and disappears bit by bit by bit. It's usually finished by Christmas though, just in time for the Christmas season treats.

Hi Holly,

We do not keep much in the house anyway, yet we do take to the assisted homes near our Church....they not only like the candy but the company too.

In the past I've taken it to the local retirement home but taking it to the firehouse is a good idea too.

My child loves the Halloween experience (Easter too actually), but has no desire to eat more than a few pieces. (Lucky me)

His Elementary School has a contest for the class to DONATE the most candy which gets sent to the troops overseas- he gets more enjoyment out of taking in a huge bag for that.

I love the idea of the candy contest and the support for the troops, Ellie. Thanks for sharing!

Holly, donating extra leftover Halloween candy is a great idea.    I have sent boxes of donations to Afghanistan to a troop where one of my clients is stationed.     All good ideas to get the candy out of the house!

Send it to the troops is the best one, in my opinion. Thanks for the ideas.

Great ideas that I've never thought of before.  This year there was a lot of leftover candy at my house!

Thanks

Holly, for some reason, we're pretty good about all the candy in our house. We still have some from last year! If we decide to get rid of some, I put it in the jar on the front desk at the office.

Holly: Need to check with my little grandsons if their mom lets them keep it all. I know they had a pile of loot.

At our house, our kids are allowed to eat all the candy they can stand on Halloween. One big binge gets most of it out of the way and they feel totally contented and satisfied.
