STAGING! Broadway STYLE!!!!!

I recently wrote this for the weekly column I write in our local paper. I think this is the funniest one I have done. You know it gets really difficult coming up with new ideas to write about staging every week.... so I have to start thinking of creative ways to explain what I need to. HA!

AMBER

 

 Living in our homes from day to day we become accustomed to the way things are. The smells, the imperfections, dad’s recliner, the catch-all room, the pets, etc. AND THIS IS OK. But when a home is on the market, as a seller, you have to put on a performance of sorts. Much like the shows on Broadway, selling a home is a mixture of lighting, position, “make-up” and ambiance. Each component of the home works together to appeal to buyers and when one component is off (much like an actor forgetting a line or the lights suddenly going off) the rest is doomed to be spoiled.

Make a first impression and steal the show by avoiding the following turn-offs when selling your home! You are guaranteed to get a standing ovation when all is done!

CATS” and dogs and hamsters and other beloved pets…..
Ok. We ALL love or friendly felines and pouches, but not every buyer does. An animal house can be a huge turnoff to a buyer! Sometimes it is not the pets themselves that turn off buyers, but the smells, the wear and tear perceived, and the allergies. Make sure to clean up after your pets more than ever when a home is listed on the market. And for showings make sure they are in a designated area and out of sight.

“GREASE”
“You’d better shape up, cause you need an OFFER!” A home that is not clean, even though you may have taken very good care of the property, comes across as quite the opposite. So use a little elbow grease and get rid of the grease in the kitchen, the dust on the baseboards and the cobwebs in the living room! Sometimes all a home needs is a good, deep-cleaning.

“The Color Purple”
This production may be great on Broadway, BUT if the color purple (or any other dark, bright, or intense color) is in production on any of your walls at home, you need to think about coloring it neutral! Neutral paint colors can do wonders for instantly expanding a space and making it look clean. Painting is often the biggest bang for your buck!

“Hairspray”
Ladies (and gents), hairspray may be great to keep those lovely locks in place, but it has no place on a bathroom vanity when showing a home. We call this unnecessary clutter and it may not just strike in the bathroom. Unnecessary clutter can be anywhere and everywhere throughout the house. Stash and organize your belongings in the bathroom, kitchen, built-ins, or any other shelf, nook or cranny. De-cluttering allows buyers to not focus on your belongings strayed throughout the house and instead envision moving their items in!

“The Lion King”
If Simba could mistake your front lawn for his home in the jungle, we could have a problem! Curb appeal is so important to creating good first impressions! It’s the first thing people see, so make sure your home’s exterior is in top notch condition when listed on the market.

Yes, every week in the Real Estate Section. And I strongly suggest everyone call their real estate editor and propose the same thing. Many papers do not have a staging column where people can find solid advice on ways to sell their homes. Thanks Holly!!!!

Hi Amber ~ This is such a clever article!  I smiled while I was reading your words.  I send out a monthly newsletter and know how difficult it can be to come up with clever articles - I cannot imagine having to do so on a weekly basis.

Very creative, Amber! Really helps it to stick in peoples minds! I love the tie to home staging and the broadway stage! who knew there were so many shows that could relate to home staging! I love the idea of a staging column in the newspaper, is this something that you need to pay for? (shows how much I know!)

Temple- When I startd last May I was cranking them out left and right, but now I am having to get creative. But there's lots of inspiration on a daily basis to pull from. It's been alot of fun. 

Dane- Many of the columnists in our section are "hmm-ho" boring, so I try to spice it up. :)

Elaine- Good to know they haven't dried up yet! :)

Yvonne- It's really picking up. Many of the columns in our paper are syndicated and so they are not usually local. I think many people are started to "get" that I am local. It's really alot of fun.

Stephanie- I don't pay for it, I write it for free. But the exposure is worth it. There are several issues we had to deal with...initially the name of my column was Center Stage....may biz name was Center Stage Homes. Some local stager complained about me getting free advertising, so we had to change the name to Set Up to Sell. It really worked out fine for me, b/c I had to change my company name anyways. :)
